I guess Stephen LaBerge MILD target is a good way to make reality checks a habit: http://www.dreamviews.com/f12/how-mi...aberge-103264/
However it should be noted that awareness within a dream and the reason to why reality checks works at all, is not because of habit, but because of awareness and intent.
If you are completely unaware of what you are doing, it doesn't matter if you see that your hand has seven fingers or ir a giant pink elephant screams to you that you are dreaming. And when you are naturally more aware as you are now and think critically you won't even need to reality check becuase you will by then notice that something is strange and wonder if you are dreaming and because of that either become lucid, or you will think of doing a reality check.
So how do you become more aware of your dreams? Awareness and Intent
Intent is magical, intent is like a magic spel even. Instead of saying "Wingardium Leviosa" in order to make something levitate, you say "I am aware that I am dreaming" in order to become aware that your are dreaming. It's like a delayed free will, when you raise your arm you do it by intent and will, just as easy as that you can raise your awareness in a dream! Here is some things to keep in mind about intent though: http://www.dreamviews.com/f12/buildi...mation-139016/
So you see I can't explain free will, just trust it for lucid dreaming as well.
There is a brain chemistry explanation as well, if you are interested in it check this video out: Lucid Dream Technique - Brain Chemistry - YouTube
And understand that you might not raise an arm in order to lucid dream, but you raise the aminergic system of the brain! (Critical thinking).
And now for awareness. Awareness shouldn't be reduced to critical thinking though, because it's much more than that.
But if you really want to practise awareness during the day, and practise the kind of memory that will make awareness spontanious in your dreams I suggest you do the following: Wake up and tell yourself that you will no forget the idea of lucid dreaming and even though you might not be able to stop think about it now you will soon naturally let youself think about something else. Then you might brush your teeth take the bus somewhere and suddenly realise "Oh I stopped thinking about lucid dreaming!". Now you use this moment of realistation to understand that what ever your current experience is right now "talking to friends, writing a test, sitting in the bus.) This is exactly how a dream will feel ike, and you can't be sure in this moment if you are dreaming or not, you might be convinced that you are awake but the looks and your own believes can decieve you. So now perform a reality check not because of habit, or to practise reality check, but becuaes of that fact that you really don't know if you are awake or asleep right now!!! Paranoia on command sort of.
When you are done just think again ok let's stop thinking about this again and the next time I will think about it, after a period of time not thinking about it, I will perform and appreciate the art of reality checking again.
One night you will probably have a spontanious lucid dream because you have practised to become spontaniously aware.
I hope this wasn't too complicated and that it can help you get started with your reality checks.
