Speaking as someone over 50 there are probably several factors. One is we have so little time to worry about things like lucid dreaming. We have bills to pay and families to support. Also up until I discovered this forum people used to tell me that dream control was impossible even though I have been doing it since I was a child. Personally I also think hormones play a role but that is inconclusive.
That could be the case with the amount of busy, but it is probably stress related. The older people are, the more they let stress effect them. Last semester I was working and doing school about 80-90 hours a week. I also have a wife with a kid on the way. I don't have the school now, but that could have been a really stress filled time, I didn't let bit get to me.
The internet part might be true though. I am 21, so I have a pretty good grasp on how to use these Internets. 
Something I forgot to mention something else. If you are doing something your whole life it does seem harder to change. Something like sleep that you do everyday is definitely riddled with habits you have to get over. A 20 year habit is easier than a 50 year habit.
