Question Reality checks... Just a few questions about them.

Ok, as some of you may know, I Can be a really lazy person. i used to practice Reality checks often, but i would do a bunch in one order from time to time. i would have the proper mindset such as "Wait, am i dreaming?" then i would do the reality checks. i was wondering, since i dont have the motivation to do a bunch of reality checks at one time, could i just try practicing one? Help is Much appreciated.

It sounds like reality checks are not for you. Its not for me either, so what i did was instead of reality checking i practice ADA(All Day Awareness). This technique is a great substitute for reality checking and has a high success rate. Search up king yoshi's tutorial on ADA, as he can explain it better than i can. You basically pay close attention to your surroundings and the small aspects of your daily life, thus increasing awareness, and this habit will carry over to your dreams.

If you really want to do reality checks however, I would practice one reality check such as plugging your nose and trying to breath at least 10 times a day spread throughout the day. :p

The thing is, i want to do reality checks along with ADA. the two in combination sound really helpful. i'll try the nose- plugging thing, but i personally like the one where you try jumping up and flying.
i'll have to look into more reality checks and just try to stick with one of them along with ADA.

One should be enough, but only if you really can't find energy for more.

But what's more important is how you do them. You have to put emotions into RCs. Each time you have to believe you are dreaming and that the RC will work. It has to be "omg, I'm dreaming" and then do RC and believe it will work. So when you are in a dream, you don't just do RC automatically without realizing you are dreaming. If you do it right, you will get that OMG feeling in a dream too and it will get you lucid.

Find some fun RCs to do.

It's ok to stick with one reality check, just be sure that you select the one that can be used generally everywhere, i personally suggest 'looking at hands' reality check for that, what gab said about mindset is also important as well.

You can use just one if you want, but I think using more than one opens more possibilities. I look at time, or numbers to see if they'll change, or words as well. I'll look at my shadow to see if it's there, or my body to see if I am wearing different clothes, or if I am nude. It's happened. I've been asking myself if what's behind doors is what I expect it to be or if it is something different. When I open a door to see, I check to see if anything is out of place. I don't like feeling restricted to plugging my nose, or stretching my finger, or passing my finger through my palm.

If I get really motivated, I will do reality checks, but even then I have trouble following up. I haven't done any the past couple weeks, unless I see something odd that may not seem right, just to make sure. A lot of things are odd in the dream world so its not a bad practice. But other than that, rc's aren't really my thing. I've been practicing ADA from time to time, trying to get better. Just a few hours ago I took my dog on a long walk and did a 30 minute practice, engaging all five senses. It really helps awareness inside a dream thus making the feel of a dream a noticeable difference from waking life. The last two nights I've had instances where, in a regular dream, I'd just blurt out, "Im dreaming". Maybe its the ADA practice kicking in? Idk but I've never really needed rc's anyway, I think awareness (as stated, it does have a high success rate) does it for me personally, although I do check my hands and plug my nose just to be 100% once I find out I am lucid. Give it a try, see how it works out for you.

The first time I learned lucid dreaming I started out with just one reality check: look at something written, look away, look back, did it change?

I remember I had one dream that got intimidated because I actually did this reality check in my dream, and even though I had no suspicion whatsoever that this was a dream and was like "oh I know this is not a dream, but whatever ... Hey, wait a minute!" That was really cool. But it was a one time incident only, and it was due to my mind just learning to do this RC out of habit just because, and so I did this in my dream just because once, and it worked once.

What worked much better for me in the past was going through life looking for weirdness, and doing this reality check whenever something was weird. Mind you still that one reality check, but it was combined with analyzing stuff around me, and categorizing it into weird versus non-weird. A lot of waking life is weird. But this habbit of looking for weirdness really helped me get lucid in the past, and I expect will help again in the future. The reality check of looking at writing was like a confirmation tool, but the looking for the weird was the primary method for me. Of course, for you something entirely different may work better.
