I can't find the link so you'll have to trust me on this (actually, you'll have to trust the original storyteller):

Some guy was lucid dreaming. All of a sudden, this shadowy figure attacks him. Now he's scared because he thinks its some demon, and he's so scared that he achieves lucidity.

The moment he achieves lucidity, he decides, instead of running away and waking up, to confront his fear. So he's been thrown on the ground a few times by now, and he gets up and walks to the dream character.

He asks very sincerely, "Who are you? Why are you attacking and hurting me?"

And the shadowy figure unmasks himself - the figure turns out to be himself.

The shadowy figure gets out a scrap of paper and scribbles something on it, hands it to him, and scurries away.

He opens the paper and reads it: "Learn to forgive yourself".

Yes, the subconscious tells you things every time you dream.

A dream is Subby's natural playground. Some people even have it harder than others to accomplish lucidity because the subconscious brain will hold them down in some way and won't let them do what they want--I suppose that the subconscious labels them as intruders. Anyway, my point is that with lucid dreams a person can "force" the subconscious to tell them things that they didn't know about themselves--what their dream job would be, why they're feeling so stressed, why they're so afraid of rags, whatever--whereas in a normal dream Subby does the same stuff, but not in the same way.

For example, a few years back I was being really angsty and decided that it would be better for everyone if I kept my problems to myself. That night I dreamed that I was in class and the teacher was . . . well, teaching. Instead of standing at the front and talking to us about the Middle East, however, he showed us a picture on the board.

The picture was of three fish stacked atop each other with some room in between each. (I'm not sure if the detail is important or not, but they were inside a fish bowl.) Together, the fish were saying something in little speech bubbles like you find in comics: "Those Who Care." The message didn't make sense to me in the dream, but once I woke up I realized that my subconscious mind was telling me, essentially, that I was being a brat and it wouldn't be good to purposely keep things bottled up.
      ~ until the very end
