If you want to do it intentionally, I agree with NyxCC that forms of autosuggestion (like repeating mantras) are your best bet. Although my all-time favorite movie, Inception isn't exactly the best resource for learning about lucid dreaming (or just dreaming in general), but one thing it did get right was that once an idea gets locked in your subconscious, it'll start to spread and grow and you'll sort of start to "build around it" as I like to call it; from one idea you come up with more, from those you come up with even more, etc. Have you ever began writing an essay and were stuck on the very first paragraph, but as you wrote you got more and more ideas? Kind of the same thing. And since your subconscious is very much is in charge of your personality which is in charge of your actions and behavior, this can most certainly alter how you think, feel, and behave as well.
While asking your subconscious in a lucid dream is a good place to start, I think NyxCC meant more that during waking life, you repeat a mantra in your mind and grasp its meaning until your subconscious starts to take it in. Either will most likely work and both are worth a shot!
