Question Inception: plant a seed into your own mind?

re watched inception and was wondering does anyone believe that its possible to do what they did? but with your own mind and subconscious?

forget about all thew movie reality rules for a minute; no "but that's not what inception means" retort. I just want to know do you think its possible to plant an idea into your subconscious that alters your waking behavior/ personality or have you experienced anything like that so for example you plant a seed to lift weights a seed that evolves into an addiction potentially. do you think that would be possible? thoughts?

You can use a mantra with good success, depending on the goal you want to achieve. If you repeat something long enough your subcon takes it in and then you may start acting differently. We often use such techniques to help us with lucid dreaming or remind us our goals, but mantras/autosuggestion can be applied to anything. Just be careful what kind of stuff you come up with.

so do you think if i seek out my subconscious during a lucid dream and repeat a mantra at them it will make a seed/ idea grow in my mind and stay there permanently? or for along time?

I won't go into the details, but I've unintentionally did this myself more than once over the course of several months or years--I can't offer any proof, but from firsthand experience it's definitely possible. If you want to do it intentionally, I agree with NyxCC that forms of autosuggestion (like repeating mantras) are your best bet. Although my all-time favorite movie, Inception isn't exactly the best resource for learning about lucid dreaming (or just dreaming in general), but one thing it did get right was that once an idea gets locked in your subconscious, it'll start to spread and grow and you'll sort of start to "build around it" as I like to call it; from one idea you come up with more, from those you come up with even more, etc. Have you ever began writing an essay and were stuck on the very first paragraph, but as you wrote you got more and more ideas? Kind of the same thing. And since your subconscious is very much is in charge of your personality which is in charge of your actions and behavior, this can most certainly alter how you think, feel, and behave as well.

While asking your subconscious in a lucid dream is a good place to start, I think NyxCC meant more that during waking life, you repeat a mantra in your mind and grasp its meaning until your subconscious starts to take it in. Either will most likely work and both are worth a shot!

Yep, that's what I meant. Also, excellent explanations above Maxis!

I love this idea. I think I could do it in my dreams by having a lucid dream, meditating on a single idea while brimming with intention, and then forgetting I ever had the dream. It kind of reminds me of how people will cast spells and then not think about them again, because they believe that thinking about the spell will cause it to lose power. But this seems more intense, because it is going deeper into yourself before you plant the idea.

If we can plant a seed in our dreams, then I think it could have a lot of applications such as improving self-confidence, getting over addictions, creating new addictions, altering one's personality, and maybe even affecting one's biochemistry/bodily health.

I'm definitely going to try this now - It's almost like the ultimate form of hypnotic suggestion.
I just wonder if it is any more effective than doing a mantra, and how could I ever know that I did it?

It is something I have been thinking about for some time. Can I just change my personality and fix some of my problems by making them no longer part of my personality? I will explain.

I think that we have all been someone else in a dream. I have been in love with several DCs during non lucids, I have had emotional reactions that are not how I would react at all. To put it simply, I have possessed a DC. I have thought about trying to posses a DC and keep it for a whole day. Like, make a DC of someone like you, but more confident and doesn't stutter when they talk and doesn't lie to people. Also, different bad habits.

Basic idea. Can I change my waking thoughts through dream control. Of course, autosuggestion and that can slowly change you as well.
