Spoiler for why we ask advice regarding dream control?:
It's interesting when people ask for help when people ask for help regarding dream control. We know that ultimately everyone's dream are unique, every dreamer has their own particular sense of reality which translates into a personal dream world. So why would we ask for advice? Doesn't that sound pointless?
Well, at first it does, but when you look at it, you realize that we are all architects of this "collective dream world". The concept of "I" is constantly molded by the presence of others, at such extent that the communication between individuals extends to their own concepts of reality, and particularly, dream reality. How many people can't probably read in a lucid dreaming because of the long-called myth of one not being able to read in a dream? Or how many people, without any deep insight regarding the physics of the dream world (better saying: the lack of), fly without any issues?
In the end, it's all pointless, so when we ask for help regarding dream control what we are really doing is asking others to tell us a story, to deceive us in some way. For all we know, darkness is not indicative of a dream fading, maybe it's a representation of some psychology aspect of ourselves, or the brain's way to express the "fog" that goes on our mind when we realize we are dreaming.
Have you tried other methods? Your brain keeps coming up with ways to prevent you to achieve your objectives (some sort of auto-sabotage), and dream control is also about getting through these self-imposed obstacles. Other ways to deal with an unstable dream would be something like yelling to the dream that you want more clarity, changing scenario (by going some other place), using other senses, or just calming yourself (it will ground yourself to the dream as you become a bit less awake, but careful or you'll loose lucidity if you push it too much).
Oh, and one last thing: remember that dream quality varies: even after loads of lucids many of us still have some lucids where the dream refuses to stabilize long enough for us to carry our tasks ^^
