      Question Uncontrollable Dream Characters?

I've recently been experiencing DCs that are resistant to my will. Usually, I can make all DCs "pause", stop, disappear, or otherwise control them, but there have been some recently that don't listen to my commands.

      Last night for example:

As the Ferris Wheel begins to break apart, I realize that I am dreaming. The world fades to black but I spin to regain lucidity and I am back in the middle of the carnival, it is now daytime but all the lights and crowds are still there, busily moving around. A little girl with cotton candy sticks her tongue out at me.

I am feeling particularly lucid so I decide to try something more advanced. Freezing time has been on my list so I give it a whirl. I clench my fists and everything stops. Very surreal! I begin walking through the frozen people when suddenly I see something dart past my peripheral vision. I turn and see nothing, but then it happens again to my left. I continue catching small glimpses of movement until I realize that they are DCs that have been unaffected by my freeze, and they are trying to evade me. This really spooks me out, as suddenly I get the feeling I am being hunted, or there is something supernatural going on. I try to freeze time again, but I see another blur a few seconds later.

This kind of thing has happened in my last two lucids, in various ways. I will mentally command a DC to come towards me or something of that sort, and they will either ignore me or start mischievously running away.

Has anyone experienced this? Or any theories?

Thats interesting. If you believe in shared dreaming, that might be a consideration.

Hmmm, it seems like a really cool experience to me, but then I am always hoping for my DC's to seam "real". It seems like these experiences have been unsettling for you though. You said that when you began feeling out of control it made you feel spooked, and like you where being hunted.

I wonder if with a little re framing these experiences could actually be blessings in disguise. Rather than approaching these "uncontrolled" DC's with an attitude of fear I wonder if it would be possible to instead approach them with an attitude of acceptance and curiosity?

You may be able to use them to make your dreams feel more "real". I don't know if this is something you are working for but I am searching for ways to make my dreams feel more real and lifelike. Like I said uncontrollable DC's may be exactly what you are in fact searching for!

(I know this is the General Lucid forum, but I thought I'd share)

The first day I tried out MILD while falling asleep I had a very long detailed dream. At one point in the dream I was caught off guard by a man walking in my direction (I was busy looking at my phone or something, it was dark and no one else was around). When I noticed him, I dropped my phone (should of been an RC since I have no phone in WL) and immediately stopped and felt very nervous and uneasy. I took a few steps back and said with as much power in my voice as I could, "Stop." (at this point I think I had acquired semi-lucidity, because I've never specifically been in a situation where I needed to tell a DC to stop doing something in such a way) He smiled at me like he thought it was hilarious and continued towards me, I turned and ran away and then the dream faded into a different timeline of the same dream. My dream never focused in enough for me to see what he looked like, all I can recall is he was about my age (not sure how I knew) and a normal sized guy.

I've been trying for a few days using MILD to put myself back into that scene and become fully lucid, and try and communicate with him, but so far no luck. Maybe some day.

Interesting point Sangfoot! Thinking about it that way, it has the potential to be really exciting. I don't believe in shared dreaming, but perhaps this is one step closer to finding my dream guide. Its my belief that Dream Guides are uncontrollable, so maybe I'm getting to the point where I will find it, and have some sweet adventures with free-willed DCs. Ill change my mind set!

At the point where you saw the glimpses of people, you must have expected there to be unfrozen DC's. Expectation is everything when it comes to lucid dreams.

What you experienced isn't too uncommon. I think the book was World of Lucid Dreaming, but I'm not entirely sure. Anyway, it was talking about how some dream characters might not bend to your command. In the book, I read about one man's experience where a dream character wouldn't believe him when he said she wasn't real, and actually hurt him. Put out a cigarette in his wrist, and he awoke to find the burn was there. Mind over matter on his part?

Many have the theory that these characters represent our subconscious, but again, theories. The answer to what dream characters are or why they exist is still as mysterious as to why we dream in the first place. And they don't always tell you what you want to know when you have questions.

I once asked a dream character--who for some reason was this weird shadow--why was I dreaming what I was. And he said, "How should I know? You're the one whose dreaming." Shortly after, I woke up. But since you have more control over your dreams than I, you have the opportunity to be more inquisitive, and ask about these characters, or ask to meet one that doesn't bend to your will. Who knows what you'll come up with.
