There really isn't much way to "do it wrong" unless you are stressing yourself out and not getting enjoyment out of the practice. There are several techniques that have worked for people on this forum. It also sounds like you are trying to WILD which can be challenging for even the most talented members of this forum (and practitioners of lucid dreaming in general). You may try practicing MILD or autosuggestion before bed and whenever you awaken during the night, or SSILD.
What kind of day work are you doing to prepare for your nightly practice? Are you asking yourself during the day whether or not you are dreaming? Are you performing reality checks? Are you trying to be more aware of your environment (asking yourself if anything is weird, or asking yourself how you got where you are, or why you are performing a certain action)? If you aren't doing any of this, lucid dreaming will probably difficult (if not impossible) for you.
And like Nooby said, if you are repeatedly seeing no success from WBTB, you may think of removing it . . . but WBTB alone does nothing for your psychological state, and really only serves to "wake you up" a bit, to to get you in a state of mind where your day work can help you. Without doing any day work, WBTB, in my opinion, is basically waking up and going back to sleep. Not too exciting!
