Sometimes when I'm on a populated area walking through crowds of people, I think of the scene from the Matrix where Morpheus is talking to Neo about "The System". I think of every human I see as an automated, half-conscious being that are completely immersed into their daily routines of going to work etc. And there I am, completely aware of my every action and the whole environment, observing. I sometimes also imagine them as dream characters and I maintain my awareness for extended periods of time in practice for lucidity. Imagining that the whole reality that you're living in is a practice simulator for LD'ing feels pretty cool.
As for what would be the best reality check in my opinion : something that you do a lot in your work that has perhaps transitioned into your dream world. Example, if you use a lot of copying machines, then do multiple reality checks when in contact with them and when you see one.
