This is extremelly common, you need to think about it this way, when you are lucid your brain becomes conscious and aware in a situation where you are not supposed to be conscious and aware. Of course this results in you being on an unstable limbo which can easily drop into waking up, this is very common for all Lucid Dreamers and your are not alone.
The only way to solve this is by practicing the fundamentals every time you get lucid, which is a problem to begin with as reaching lucidity is by itself complicated so the opportunities you have to practice are limited. In any case, on my training I dealt with around 5 months of only short lucid dreams and based on my experience in order to attain lucidity longer I recommend the following 3 factors:
1. Make sure you are in a comfortable sleep environment, no sources of light or sound. Remember you are in an unstable limbo, any external stimulation can wake you up.
2. Your attitude as you reach lucidity. This is actually something really important and has helped me a lot. Once you get lucid, DONīT GET OVEREXITED FOR THE MILLION THINGS YOU CAN DO!! Relax, and just play along with your dream for a while. If you are dreaming of walking on a field with a friend, and get lucid, don't try immediatelly to fly and change landscapes, just keep on walking and talking with your friend for a while like if you never got lucid. This will stabilize a lot your dream as you don't get to excite your consciousness. However, make sure you remember yourself constantly that you are dreaming, as playing along with your dream might lead to loosing lucidity.
3. Trying stabilization techniques. There are a lot of stabilization techniques you can apply, the ones that work the best for me are:
- Sitting on the ground and touching the floor, make sure to feel the floor and its texture with your hands.
- Rubbing your hands together.
- Shouting (yes, literally shouting) INCRESE LUCIDITY!!! Usually the effect is immediate.
In any case, make sure to play along with the dream first before making stabilization techniques, as desperatelly using stabilization techniques immediatelly might also lead to waking up.
I hope this might be of help to you.
Best,
