      While I'm dreaming I can't make choices! HELP(I CAN'T RC)

      hi guys,
I have excellant dream recall, and I have read all the the posts about doing RC. But the problem is, to do a RC you have to check for : unusual things, look at the time, and ask myself If I am in a dream, but I can't!. Because while I'm dreaming I can't make choices, therefore I cant do reality checks, I really do need help! and don't tell me I need to look for unusual things like a flying dog because I don't choose to do the things i do in my dreams, they just happen, therefore I cant check the time or RC. HELP PLEASE!!!
      Thanks Alot Guys

Don't get impatient with yourself. That's a completely normal, if not absolutely typical condition. I mean, nobody can make choices right off. It takes awhile for your thoughts to carry over. Do RCs in real life and eventually they will carry over. It takes time and effort. Good luck!

You didn't say whether you are journaling or not. Even if you already have excellent dream recall, journaling will help because it will get you thinking about your dreams.

There is no shortcut, really. The more you immerse yourself during your waking time, the more likely you will remember in your dreams. Reading other's dreams, writing and analyzing your own for dream signs and discussing it all are great ways to keep your mind on being constantly alert to dream signs and triggering your memory to do RCs.

Another thing might be trying some other techniques. It seems you are only working on DILD right now. Have you tried WILD or MILD? Read through the tutorials for some other things to try. (The vast majority of my LDs have been WILD - but the best of them have been DILD.)

Have you picked up LaBerge's books?

HTH. Do hang in there. It is so very worth the effort.

"Exploring the World of Lucid Dreaming". It's a must read...

You doing anything with your journal? Recognizing dream signs? Looking for them in real life and RCing when you recognize them?

Again - that's about DILD, and there are other ways. What now is, perhaps, reading the book, reading through the tutorials here to find other techniques and methods that might appeal to you, and then just sticking with it. Few people realize instant gratification with LD - though there are several out there who will tell you it can be had instantly for a price.

      Welcome

I can rarely think at all in dreams, up to now my lucids have all been WILDs or just one-off dreams where I can think. Annoying isn't it. For me as time has passed I have been thinking more and more in dreams, so just give it time.

      Good luck

Doing RCs is not just about looking for strange things. Most of the time you notice these spontaniously, impromptu. RCs should be performed often so that when something feels strange or not-quite-common routine, you will do one, just to check its not a dream, and will probably find it is! I find myself having to do it quite often in real life just incase, without prompt. Another way to increase your chance is to spend a lot of time just fantasising about having one, and hoping hard for one each night, also try WILDing in the morning. Whether you fail or not, it doubles as a rather nice WBTB method, I like to think! GL and try not to stress out at other members please

Strange, it seems like nobody's mentioned what seems, to me, like the most obvious thing to say.

This isn't just your problem, this is the exact problem everyone that doesn't naturally LD tries to overcome. You're barely concious to unconcious in dreams, which is why afterwards it seems like the dream was a movie that sort of happened to you, which is practically true, although technically, everything you did in the dream was your own choice. You just made the choices without thinking about it, like you do with many things in waking life.

The solution to this problem, seeing as the problem is learning to induce lucid dreams, isn't simple, but the best tips have already been given by Gwendolyn, pj and danbarber (i.e reading EWLD, browsing through the tutorials, practicing induction techniques and especially have a lot of patience)
      A dream
is a reality that others cannot see.
      Reality
is a dream you share with others.

doing reality checks in a dream is an achievement. Its being on the verge of being lucid.

Its amazing the things that happen in dreams that we accept without questioning.

If you have good dream recall that's a key first step. (If you don't remember your dreams, you won't remember your lucid dreams).

I recommend you read about MILD technique. Part of that is to analyze your vivid dreams and see what elements could have told you that you were dreaming. This builds up the mental muscles to help you become lucid.

      good luck

This may not be the suggestion you are looking for, but it is a suggestion.

I tend to incubate specific behaviors. I believe there are good and bad ways to conduct one's self while dreaming. For example, running away from things, looking for things are both bad behaviors that may extend for the duration of a dream. Before I sleep I tell myself "I stand still and face my fears, I am not violent" or "I refuse to search for things, I move on and find better things later".

As an example, last night I was running from an upset school committee. I just told myself to stop running. I did and I realized something important. Not that I was dreaming, but that I was in control. I bypassed lucidity and went straight to (dream) control. I was not "online" and thinking. However, when one subconsciously programs one's behaviors, one does not need to do that. One still havs the ability to make decisions.
