Smile The REAL reason I LD

I've been here long enough that I finally feel comfortable enough to talk about my true motivation for persuing lucid dreaming.

I'm not here because I want to have mind-blowing LD sex or fight epic battles alongside my favorite characters from movies and games.

The reason I'm here at DV learning about lucidity and dream control is a bit more complex. I have horrible nightmares due to some bad stuff I went through when I was younger. For several years my nightmares were so bad that I was didn't want to go to sleep. Then my doctor put me on a medication that sometimes helps nightmares due to trauma. The medicine worked! I've been taking it for a few years, but I've gotten to the point where I am ready to deal with all of the issues that cause the nightmares.

I figure if I get good enough at LDing and controling my dreams I will deal with the nightmare issues AND I will no longer need to take the medicine. My doctor supports my goal. So far, over the last six months I have gone from taking 5mg of the medicine to only taking 2mg! I am so proud of that! Each time I step down my dose I have a huge resurgence in the nightmares, but I have come to look at it as a perfect chance to fight my own demons. Right now I am almost ready to go down again, to only 1mg. I am going to wait until the holidays are over, otherwise I would probably do it this weekend.

That, my friends, is why I work so hard at LDing. I have discovered a lot of other reasons to LD in the process -- most of them theraputic. In my LDs I can talk to my subconscious mind, confront my problems, battle my demons, and discover more about myself. I was wondering if anyone else here LDs for similar reasons.

I'm glad you could share that with us -- that's why this isn't a forum; it's a community.

Also an amazingly practical reason for LDing.

I haven't had nightmares since i was very young and don't plan to, but i do have disturbing dreams sometimes. When i learn how to sufficiently LD, i plan to battle those out as well. I've actually found out quite a bit about myself through dreaming.

Good luck with your demon-battling and your reduced medicine. I'm glad you have such a good reason to keep on LDing.

That sound like a really great reason for LDing, and it's especcially great how you can really see yourself improving in that you don't need to take as much of the medicine. Good luck!

Seeker28... yeah thanks for sharing that with us.

I feel stupid now... All my foolish goals compared to yours. I do indeed want to use it for solving a few things in the past involving shame, but it's nothing that important at all.

Anyway I wish you best of luck on reaching your goal. Be sure that you're more of a man than likely anyone I've met. The worst pain is the pain inside our minds But you've been managing to deal with it. I take my hat off and bow down to you, really. Be sure you're becoming much a tougher person as you advance.

Lastly, do keep us informed of any major step you give. It's good to know things are getting better for you!

      Wolf hugs!

the song "Higher" by Creed is about Lucid dreaming. Written by the lead-singer (i think) after he used lucid dreaming to stop his own recurring nightmares.

      Keep it up!

Exactly, b12, DV really is a community. I used to always laugh at people who would talk about friends from on-line, but now I get it.

      Thanks, Blargh.

You're right, Kromoh, I have gotten a lot tougher. Really I'm not afraid of much anymore. And by the way, I'm a girl!

That's cool about the Creed song. I didn't know that. I'll have to listen more closely to that song next time I hear it.

Cool song. Thanks for the tip

I use LD (Well the learning process) mostly for Theraputic reasons. After a few years of depression i'm feeling a bit detached from myself so i'm hoping to, in a small way, be able to get back in touch with myself through Lucid dreaming and the meditation i'm combining it with.

Another reason is because i've always been fascinated with dreams I guess.

EDIT: Congratulations on your progress! I love to see that LD can help people. Inspires me to try harder

No way! I have that song on my LD playlist. I can see how one could interpret it to be about lucidity, but I didn't think that it was intentional. Do you have a source for that info?

Right, so on the actual topic. For me, it used to be at the point where the only way I could get to sleep would be from total exhaustion. I was irrationally afraid of . . . I don't know what. But I didn't want to close my eyes, didn't want to dream. I overcame it with religion-related methods, but I can see how lucid dreaming would have helped me had I known about it. I still have sporadic episodes of irrational fear once every two weeks or so, but it's manageable.

I admire your initiative and commitment to ridding yourself of this. I hope everything continues to go well and that you will soon get to the point where you enjoy going to sleep.

Wow, that's awesome about Creed - it used to be one of my favorite songs.

I never would have guessed it, but i looked at the lyrics again and it totally makes sense.

Thats the cool thing about lucid dreaming, people do it for recreation, and some people do it to better themselves and find abstract ways to overcome their problems. So... thanks for sharing, and I really hope you eventually drop that medicine and master lucid dreaming!

I was talking earlier to my counselor this week about my progress with lucidity. She pointed out that since I started working so hard on it I haven't once dive-bombed into the depths of despair, which over a 6 month period is quite amazing for me. I think that the LDing and the continual sense of working toward a goal, as well as my excitement, has helped me avoid depression. I hope that you will find a similar effect, Woozie. I know that LDing has put me more in touch with myself than I have ever been.

Thanks for the support, everbody. I had a dream that almost turned into a nightmare last night, but even though I wasn't lucid, I managed to stay calm and turn the dream around! I was so surprised that I was able to do that even with out lucidity.

wow, nice work Seeker! we knew you could it

my source for the Creed info? mmm, I've read that a few times....here's one example; but the lyrics seem to make it pretty clear. The song gets me so psyched up for dreaming:

      here's a quote:

"The song was written after Stapp used the technique to stop a recurring nightmare he had been experiencing in which he was pursued and killed by a gunman. In the dream, he would turn left at the end of a highway and hide under a bridge, only to be found by his assailant and shot. When he had studied lucid dreaming and tried the technique, he was able to turn right and escape the gunman. Stapp stated that after he wrote the lyrics, he never had the dream again."

Just wanted to post the lyrics...:

When dreaming I'm guided through another world
      Time and time again
At sunrise I fight to stay asleep
'Cause I don't want to leave the comfort of this place
'Cause there's a hunger, a longing to escape
      >From the life I live when I'm awake
      So let's go there
      Let's make our escape
      Come on, let's go there
      Let's ask can we stay
      Can you take me higher?
To a place where blind men see
      Can you take me higher?
To a place with golden streets
Although I would like our world to change
      It helps me appreciate
      Those nights and those dreams
But, my friend, I'd sacrifice all those nights
If I could make the Earth and my dreams the same
      The only difference is
To let love replace all our hate
Up high I feel like I'm alive for the very first time
Up high I'm strong enough to take these dreams
      And make them mine

whoa, seeker, I'm proud of you! *pulls out some pom poms* rah rah rah!

I used to take lots of medication...not for nightmares, but for other mental problems. But the medicine always has other side affects, as I'm sure you can attest. It tended to change the way I thought, period, not just about what I was looking to solve with the medicines, but everything else. I took myself off of it after a year or so, and had to learn how to cope with my problems without medicinal help (which most people said I couldn't do). But I did it! And now I'm fulfilled and medicine free at the same time.

My problems had nothing to do with nightmares, but I believe very strongly in the theraputic power of dreams, and my mind tends to naturally make analogies for real life problems in my dreams. Sometimes I don't always recognise them as such, but that's another matter. My dreams have always helped me overcome a great deal...I didn't overcome them there, but dreaming about it prepared me for overcomming my problems in reality. So I'm just saying I strongly, strongly support what you're trying to do and applaud your gumption and bravery to work so hard at it...and be willing to share it with everybody here at Dreamviews!

There's very little good that can come out of a traumatic experience, but I would say that since your mind is already taking it to your dreams, you've been given a perfect chance. It shows that even subconciously you're making a regular effort to overcome it...otherwise, it might just have been repressed. Plus, the battlefield couldn't be better for you...*swings a baseball bat around* its like playing on your home field. You just got to get a little comfy at home plate, and hopefully you can *smack* knock the root of your problems so far out of the park they break a window in China. Go Team Seeker!

Plus, you've got a pretty awesome doctor. Most that I know would try to keep you on whatever meds you've got, because they either don't understand the value of overcoming things without medication, or they're trying to line their own pockets cause they're paid a lot by the perscription companies. It nice that you've found a very supportive one who seems genuinely concerned with your welfare.

It pretty brave to stand up to what's bothering you like that, especially when the 'easy out' of marvelous modern medicine is available to you. You've dealt with it before, but you're weaning yourself off anyways in the hopes of taking this thing out at its source. That's pretty cool, dude. Pretty dang cool.

      Thanks, Forynia.

Yeah, I'm lucky to have such a good doctor. She is pretty good at listening to what I want and what I need. Plus she knows I'm willing to put in the time and effort to reach my goals, so I think that has made her more willing to consider non-medicinal alternatives.

      Hi seeker28.

Thanks for sharing your story and I wish you the best of luck.
I think its interesting how you can cure nightmares with LD.. I rearly have nighmares, but some times i get them. However since I started training LD in september I have not experiencing a single nightmare.. Every time I get close to a nightmare it triggers my Lucidy. The begining of a nightmares have become one of my true dream signs..

      Regards.
