If you had the choice to not require any sleep to function properly, would you take it?

OK, so I have been pondering over this scenario for a little while.
If you had the choice between a: not requiring any sleep and b: continuing with your current routine (i.e. requiring rest to function 'normally' with the bonus of lucid dreams) which would it be? obviously option a: is not quite possible at the moment, but please expand your imagination.

despite my love of sleep and the lucid experiences I have been through, I would much rather be able to function a full 24 hours and would discard sleep altogether if I could (hell, I've tried enough times). even discovering lucid dreaming, I still feel as though my time is wasted sleeping - but let's face it, we all make the most of our sleep/dreams this way so I should be thankful.

i would be interested to know what you people think.

EDIT: I am not sure if this thread is better suited to the sleep & health section?

I would rid my need for sleep in a heartbeat. Lucid dreaming is great, and it's even better because it gives back some of your life that is required to be asleep, but it is a poor make up for a third of a lifetime.

      Screw sleep.

Id definetly rather not need to sleep but im thinking just because u dont need it u could still do it so, id give up sleep if i could still do it but if ur saying making sleep impossible then id have to think about it.

No i wouldn't take it. I don't like the idea of being perpetually awake even if i could function properly with it. It doesn't sound very appealing but i'd be willing to try it for a trial period. The closest a person can get to that i beleive is Polysthatic sleep.

I like to have my down time.

This is like asking me if I'd like to do a hallucinogenic drug that's so addictive that I will spend a third of every day wasted on it with no chance to quit. I don't do heroin and I wouldn't do sleep either if I didn't have to.

Simply the prospect of having fifty percent more time in my life - well, I'd have to take it. Yeah, lucid dreams are great, but not worth decades of my life.

Yeah, I feel pretty much the same way, I'd give up making sleep necessary but I'd still like to have the option of being able to sleep. As sort of a mental break when you're bored and just need a break, but as is sleep takes up way too much of our lives. However, this way you could still LD. I'd still probably sleep at least once every couple of days, but that would dramatically increase the time wasted asleep. What would be even better is if they could make it so you can dream the whole time you're asleep and always remember everything that happened. Then you're not wasting time asleep and I'd opt not to give up sleep.

I would choose to sleep. That's like asking if I never had to eat, would I not eat. It's depriving you of something enjoyable IMO.

Definitely, definitely not. I would die, really I would. @_@ Lack of dreaming, down time, etc.

You could still find other ways to relax apart from sleeping. Option a: doesn't necessarily mean that you would have to be living hectically for all 24 hours. That would be nasty. An example, instead of going to sleep last night I watched 3 movies and read 2 short stories - I was stress free and chilled after that... granted, I am feeling pretty groggy now.

To be honest, it depends if your brain sorts itself out or not. Apparently your brain sorts everything you've learnt through the day, and you become more efficient. I'd take the chance to not need sleep only if your brain starts magically working by itself in the night, mainly because I'd be speaking to people in different time zones, and taking more time to train on Stepmania and games and stuff. Because of the fact I'd know everyone was in bed, I'd be free to play the games I have. Basically, I like talking to my friends more than anything and that's why I'd probably take the chance to not require sleep.

I would choose the option to not need sleep mainly because sometimes I'll get so into a project that it is hard to stop, even if I've already gone 48 hours without sleep. Currently I only stop when I get like that because I can no longer function well enough to continue.

That said, however, I'd still sleep nearly every night just because I so enjoy sleep. It is like a little vacation every night! I like to dream, lucid or not, and I like to see what things occupy my mind in that misty time right as I fall asleep. Plus LDing has helped me deal with a lot of issues I would have struggled to come to terms with without it.
