      Natural

Just wondering. Who here is a natural lucid dreamer? I am, and I was wondering how common it was.

Its always happened for me, if its the same for you, then yes you probably are. Or if you always LD'd before you knew about LDing then I'd say your a natural, yeah. I want everybody to reply to this topic though, not just naturals. (That would defeat the purpose of this topic )

Yea, Brandon is right, there are plenty about this already... I'm a natural, as in, as a kid I would commonly realize I was dreaming... took me a long time to figure out i could take control.

I'm a natural, been lucid dreaming since the age of 4.. taught myself how to do it without even knowing what lucid dreaming was at the time. I was having a recurring nightmare, same nightmare night after night, so one night before i went to bed I thought to myself "i know im gonna have the same nightmare again tonight but this time im gonna let the monster eat me" sure enough i had the same nightmare and remembered my intent. I stood my ground and the monster disappeared and i was left to wonder about the dreamscape. I'm now 24 and I would say i've easily had over a thousand LD's

      I'm natural.

I have a friend who brought it up one day about how there are techniques out there to lucid dreaming, and I said to him "are you kidding? I do it all the time." and his jaw just DROPPED....I wasn't sure to think of his reaction, but then he started asking me all these questions. I don't think I could help him, though, he seems a lot more interested in lucid dreaming than I am ^_^....

I don't know, man, sometimes I'm just in a dream, and I notice something's not right, and go "hey, this is a dream......and that means it's OK to rob that Sony truck."

lol....too bad PS3's aren't that easy to get in real life.

It's important to note that there is no strict standard definition for a 'natural' lucid dreamer. Some people say a natural is:

      • a person who had lucids in their childhood
      • a person who has lucids without knowing what they are
      • a person who has lucid dreams at a high frequency
      • a person who has lucid dreams without using induction techniques
      • a person who doesn't use artificial or chemical induction techniques
      • a person who has 'high quality' lucid dreams often
      • etc.

But a person who had lucid dreams in their youth may not be able to have them as easily when they are older (just check out the newb section and how many people say this)
I had my first lucid dream completely out of the blue, when I was about 16, and I had about 2 a year until I started to work really hard at it. Is that natural?
A person who had to learn to have lucid dreams can later have them at a high frequency.
Some newbs have their first lucid dream after hearing it's possible. Even though they've never done it in their life, or used any techniques for that one.
Using natural means to have dreams may or may not make them 'natural' depending on your personal interpretation. Staying awake for REM rebound, stressing yourself out, and consuming entirely too many vitamins may also do it.

      So for me at least,
I had my first lucid dream very randomly one day when I was about sixteen, I had a lot of trouble getting more of them and would only get a few every year, but once I got very serious about reading and researching and studying and discussing lucid dreaming I was able to get them very frequently, about 2+ a week on average. I've had five in the past three days. Some of these are through techniques, some are through supplements, some are through reality checking, some are WILDs and some are DILDs, some occur when I just KNOW that I'm dreaming, some are crappy, some are amazing, and that very first one happened before I knew it was possible. So, go figure.

OH, and personally my definition of a natural is someone who has lucid dreams and exercises dream control at a high frequency, who has throughout their life, and doesn't intentionally use induction techniques. Those people who, when they hear others talk about lucid dreaming, say 'Wait, not everyone can do that? I've been controlling my dreams since I was little, I always know that I'm dreaming when I'm dreaming.' But even that's a very open definition. I don't consider myself a natural in the slightest, even though my first lucid was 'natural' (as are a lot of peoples').

I would describe a natural as someone who has them regularly and doesn't do anything to make them happen. (As in, they are concious in all of their dreams).

That concept seems hard for me to grasp though, would it be WILDs all the time, or the temporary hypnosis from the hynogogia and brief lapse in conciousness before the dream starts? WILDS seem to me to be something you kind of have to train yourself to do though, to initially get past the physical sensations and the distractions caused during the process.

As described above, I never knew about Lucid Dreams when I'd had my first few... When I did realize what they were I started exercising differant forms of control in them. But, in order to have them often I need to do RC's off and on or really focus on the intent of realizing I'm in a dream when I'm dreaming. As far as dream recall I don't keep a journal, I just think about my dreams often and run through them in my head.

But by no means do they happen nightly, or even weekly. Sometimes more then once in a week, but that is unusual.

My def of natural: Someone who has lucid dreams withouth any kind of training/effort, may or may not know what it is.

Thats why I don't consider myself natural, so much time training to get lucids, it was worth the effort. Tough my brother is a natural... and so is some other people I know, the lucky things <.<

Does it have anything to do with genetics? Anybody know anything about it? My parents also seem to be naturally inclined to do it too.

I've always considered myself a "natural". However, I didn't realize until today how many definitions there are for the term. I call myself a natural because I have had lucid dreams since childhood, before I even knew that there was a name for them. However, not all of my dreams are lucid. I still have regular dreams too. I have decent control over my lucid dreams but I do struggle from time to time with certain aspects. So maybe I'm not a natural after all?

Maybe it's a natural talent that alot of people just don't know how to do because they aren't trained to think that way?

Imagine if from birth it was part of a daily routine and widely accepted, even taught in school as part of general education...

Well I have natural SP, that I use to enter a LD. I used to be afraid of SP, but since I started coming here after researching SP, I now use that to enter a LD, I have 3 or 4 short ones every time I have awake SP. I don't know what that is called, but that's how I do. The only thing I do is the nose plug RC just because I think it's "wicked" cool! lol.

Non-natural here, even though dreams have always fascinated me. Should've researched more. You could say I'm a bit of a natural at recalling dreams. I can recall tons of dreams from my childhood

I think it's also your environment that effects your LD'ing ability. In my family, there is little attention for dreaming (none at all actually) and as of such I kinda lost interest when I entered puberty
Also, noone ever remembers their dreams and they think I'm crazy if I'm WBTB'ing. Couldn't care less. They're the ones that are missing out, not me ^^

I'm in the same boat as TLS. I've always had amazing dream recall for as long as I can remember, but am not a natural LDer. While my dad and brother claim they "don't dream" because they have no dream recall ability whatsoever.

Might as well mention this too, after I started getting into learning about LD's I've been talking about it at work a lot. One of my friends wasn't familiar with the term Lucid Dream but when I explained it he was all nonchalant and said he knows when he's dreaming all the time. He said he found it annoying...

Few of my friends too. They are hardly interested. From what I've heard, their level of lucidity and control is very low. They end up waking up when they change too much XD

LD'ing is not annoying, it's awesome!
Glad to have found someone who's in same boat

I've always had strong dream recall and vividness, but I haven't been a truly conscious lucid dreamer until I found Dream Views. I've been having 'natural' lucid dreams since I was around 10 (I would guess that's the earliest but I could be wrong). I haven't however done anything more than changing my own actions or small things in the environment until I learned about Lucid Dreams from a friend and then in Psych Class. Since then I've been able to make much better use of my LDs, involved reality checks and stabilizers and becoming aware in the dream of my potential to change things. Though I must say, I'm not a natural at altering things. I trying to spawn something in the Lucid I had this morning but gave up after 2 failed attempts.

I'm not much of a fan of the topic, I feel like this is the kind of thing that doesn't need to be openly asserted. Just because someone isn't a natural it doesn't limit their abilities in any way, and they may indeed surpass a 'natural' through will power, time, and practice. I hope those who don't define themselves as naturals don't think of the naturals as more gifted or anything like that.
