People don't want to have to work for something

I don't think many people know about it and maybe those people just don't talk about it as much:/ I pretty much keep LDing to myself.

It seems like Lucid Dreaming was never a huge phenomenon to begin with. I've know about since '06, and I've only seen it a few times on Dateline.

I got 2 of my friends into it. Others were just like "oh, ok...kinda weird."

I never knew it was popular. Most people I've told it about aren't interested, or those that are, only express an interest in my adventures and never want to have any of their own. Quite strange really. "Did you know there's a way to live out all your wildest fantasies and fulfil your every desire, giving you a sense of complete freedom to do anything you want?"

"Really? What's on TV?"

If I could find my copy of EWOLD, a lot more people in my school (teachers included) would be asking me about it. My parents are into it. I doubt they've done it, but they don't disapprove of it at all. Only one of my friends is into it (best friend), but she has crap recall and has fallen out of it as of late. But I don't pass up the chance to remind her of it.

People who I've told have always been like WOW, I want to do that!!eleven and then mostly they've started trying to have them. Only 2 people I've told have ever succeeded to any great extent. The rest just sort of fell of through frustration or laziness.

The problem is that to achieve decent rate of LDs you should be really lucky (to be natural, for example), devoted or motivated. You also have to keep some sort of regimen (more sleep, keep DJ or do some exercises regularly). And most of people are either too busy, have no strong incentive to do this or into other hobbies (playing online games for example ).

i dont think its ever been "big" ive never heard many people talk about it ever. infact the only time i had heard of people talking about it was this week on TV when stephen laberge came on to talk about it. but other than that, ive not heard much talk about it.

I think most people who try to lucid dream think they can just do it on command from the beginning and get frustrated when they cant.

People I tell about it usually seem really excited at first (I've had to re-buy EWOLD after lending it out a couple of times) but they're a lot less thrilled once they realize how much work is involved...

I'm just getting back into it after about a 4 year break (college = constant sleep deprivation) so for me it seems like it's getting more popular!

It's not popular because most people don't even know about it. I've only met 2 people who had even heard of it before I told them. One of my friends is a natural, and even she didn't know what it was. She was just one of those people who had just thought everyone could do it. And a lot of people don't want to have to put forth the required efforts. Journals, RCs, practice, laying in place for 20 mins waiting for a WILD... And a lot of the ones that do expect instant results. Most of the people I tell are just like, "Woah, awesome." but don't actually DO anything. In fact, my mom says she'd rather NOT have them because "sleep is supposed to be a restful thing, and I don't want to be running around. I just want to sleep." She won't listen to anything I have to say about the matter.

When was it popular again? Wonder why its not popular tough, people like free things... lucid dreaming is free and anything you want it to be (some exceptions), so why not use it? <.<

ha, true..

A friend of mine is a natural lucid dreamer. Once I talked to him about lucid dreaming he began talking about him self having these dreams where he knew he was dreaming some times...

So I teached him the nose plug RC and now he has them even more and when he has them he plugs his nose to check if he's really dreaming.

But the others... they really just look at me with a wierd look and think it's lame.

Overdramatized and not easy to achieve on a regular basis are what put people off. Lucid dreaming is for those who are willing to invest a lifetime persuing it and not something that you buy and expect to get ASAP. I find most non-lucid dreamers have that attitude when it comes to overhyped stuff or things that promises great benefits...they want it ASAP like as though they paid money for it. Another thing is that lucid dreaming cannot be used as a substitute for things we don't have but more of a supplement to what we already have.

It just seems odd to most people. They probably think It's just crazy and cannot be achieved or yeah just too much work to comprehend. As well as they probably do not know of steps to get their and don't bother to search for them, just thinking it happens naturally every now and then if their lucky.

I can understand that - sometimes I'm really tired and/or depressed and just want to be temporarily dead for a few hours and not have to bother.

Yeah I was one of them. I can't imagine it's getting any less popular. Afterall, due to sites like this, there can only ever be a growth in awareness of it. Surely some of the people who would otherwise never have heard of it will take it up and continue to practise it?
Maybe I underestimate how hard it is

Interesting thread, I had never heard of lucid dreaming until maybe a year ago when i researched what it was called, although ive been having lucid dreams naturally since i was 12 as far as i can remember. Everyone ive tried to talk to about lucid dreaming thinks its cool but thats it. I think maybe its hard to get someone interested in lucid dreaming until they know how amazing it actually is, until then they probably just think its interesting but wont look further into it. I guess im lucky enough to be a natural lucid dreamer but it really makes me sad that everyone cant do it so easily...it really bothers me because when people i talk to about lucid dreaming dismiss it as nothing but a novelty it makes me feel like maybe it really is and im just wasting my time dreaming. So not to hijack this thread, but anyone else feel like LDing makes you an outcast in a way since only those who also LD understand you/it?

I don't know, lucid dreaming isn't something I go broadcasting to the world, I've only told my close friends about it. I don't tell my parents because I'm sure they'll automatically think it's something "spooky" and won't want me messing around with "supernatural" garbage =/
I guess not many people want to spread news about it because dreams have been thought of as strange occurences for a long time, and being able to control those dreams and play out crazy unimaginable fantasies is even stranger. People just want to live their simple happy lives

Alot of my friends think they know what it is but when they say o yeah i had a lucid dream and tell me what happened i have just given up saying no that wasn't a lucid lol

i've gotta agree, I don't think lucid dreaming's ever been that big or popular. Seeing as you've got to really work hard for it, it's hard for it to become popular amongst people who are so busy and have other things on their minds. I mean, I haven't had an LD for ages and am finding it difficult to focus on it these days (and that's with a want to have an LD). For those only mildly interested, it's really unlikely they'll experience one and thus unlikely it'll get popular?

I have always wondered that...why is it that SO many people never seem to actually be interested in it? I have talked about it openly to my "friends" and they didn't even seem to give a crap. It was just sort of a "oh that's cool, new topic" sort of thing.
