WILDing is one technique where you enter the dream consciously compared to DILDing which is where you are already in a dream and realize that you are dreaming(what your asking about). They are BOTH methods to have an LD, but, with WILDing, you usually enter SP followed by a dream The one case where I had a DILD, I woke up fine. By that, I mean I wasn't in SP at all. Hope that helps
