Written dream journals or online ones- which do you prefer and why?

I've tried both and am wondering what you guys think on the topic.

I don't know about you, but I can type a hell of a lot faster than I can write.
While that decides it for me, some people decide on a lot of things, such as being able to reach their journal, instead of having to turn on their computer, they can also draw or doodle if they feel like it.
There are pros and cons to both, the pros just happen outweigh the cons, for me.

I like the personal feel to a written dream journal, however the advantages of an online one is too great.

      1) typing is faster than writing
      2) typed dreams can be saved forever... but words written on paper might pale out or paper might get corrupted

      Typing
      1. Faster
      2. You can get it all without hand cramps
      3. You can bold, highlight, underline, and link to things quickly and easily
      4. Easier to protect
      5. Easier to share
      6. Can be backed up and/or saved online, versus lost, burnt, spilled on, whatever
      7. Don't have to worry about handwriting... depending, it can be illegible when you write.
      8. Dreams can be found easily through keyword searches.
      9. Ready to go. You don't have to find a pen if it's fallen away from the journal or if you've lost it.

      Writing
      1. Better memory (imo)
      2. Eyes don't have to deal with bright screen
      3. You can doodle out the dream, too
      4. Kept right next to bed, don't have to get up, move a laptop, sit at your computer, whatever
      5. Easier to write keywords and then DEILD or just get back to sleep quickly
      6. A place to keep dreams you don't want to share online.
      7. Can write in code easily

I find that keeping a paper DJ by my bed, I'm a more diligent oneironaut. If I rely on typing them up, I usually only get my very last dream, unless I WBTB or can remember them well enough in the morning.

Ideally? You'll keep a paper DJ, and type up your interesting dreams.

I keep a DJ on the computer, but not online. I sleep with my laptop on the bed or next to the bed, so it's not much effort for me to get it.

I also have a notepad next to my my bed, which I write keywords in when I wake up during the night or in the morning if I don't want to type up my dream yet. Sometimes I'll type keywords on the laptop instead if I slept with it on. Then I'll type out my dream fully later on.

I've created images as well using Paint on the computer. I suppose I could draw them out on paper and then scan them if I wanted to.

It's perfect for me. I used to write them out in a book, but it took too long.

online: I don't trust computers, because they can be infiltrated.

written: I'm too scared of it being discovered and falling into the wrong hands. (actually now that I think about it anyone's hands are the wrong hands.)

So I've settled for using my memory, and it's worked out so far.And yes, I know Im paranoid, but I dont want anyone reading about my dreams.

I don't bother with an online DJ.

I usually am too lazy to even just write down keywords, but when I do I use a notebook.

Have you ever thought about password protecting it?

It wouldn't really be online, then, would it? :p

But sure, it's quite easy, really, to create a password protected file. Either by using some sort of built in functions (I know Word suppport it), or a program that run on top.
Windows XP Pro supports encryption nativly, and I'm sure some of the Vista and Win7 editions does so too.
You could also make a dreamjournal in the Wake journal section of this forum, then people would need to log on with your profile to read it. (although it's possible the admins have access, I don't know about that).
So it'd certainly be possible to make a Dreamjournal you wouldn't have to be scared of writing in.

I believe they can read it, but they don't. Why would they? I have a DJ there and even if they read it, I don't care. I just don't want everyone to know what my dreams are (and what I do in some of them ).

i've never had a written journal, unless you count times when my internet was down and I would still type it up on my computer, and paste it later on. I wont knock either since I haven't tried the other method. But for me, it's all about getting on this comp.

I prefer the written journal, probably because my dreams are always in relation to my private life. I'm too lazy to type in my dreams -____-. And I love to write for better memory.

Anything can be lost, even online.

But I do both. I either hand write my journal or type it in Word Perfect. My journals are many times very private and personal. If there is something I want to share online, I paste it in. Or sometimes, I just do the journal online. I like to share results from experiments, and try new things or refinements from others.

Wow I didn't know that so many people prefer to keep their dream journals private. To be honest, I doubt anybody is so interested about the contents of somebody else's DJ that it makes sense to hide it. We all have dreams.

Take the DJs stored at this forum... Does anybody actually reads them attentively all the time, except their authors? (I'm talking about DJs with normal dreams of course, LD-DJs would attract more attention)

That's pretty much what I do. Since school's been in session, I haven't been able to get to a computer until about 3:00 PM. If it was interesting enough to remember that long, it goes on the computer. On paper, I outline with a few bullet points, and that's about it. However, since school's out, I might be able to keep up with my online journal better.

As for privacy, I'm fairly certain that nobody can read my paper journal. Sometimes, even I can't read it. Anybody I know isn't going to be able to read my online journal either: my parents are nearly computer illiterate and wouldn't be able to find it (even though it's bookmarked.)

I prefer handwritten, because I often draw a lot of the dream as well. That really isn't an option online (at least it is not as easy).

      Online.

I write keywords then put it online as soon as I can.

I have my Blackberry right next to me when i sleep, When i wake from a dream, I quickly note it in my 'Memo pad' on there it's quick&Easy. & i can transfer the dreams quickly onto my laptop in the morning. But i have both to be honest. I have a written dream journal to. But since getting my blackberry i haven't really written in there.

I like both of them equally. I try to write in my written one first, though, because if I type the dreams up first then I'll lose motivaion to write them later. Besides, I can't put my computer under my pillow, and having a written one can be handy at times.

I use a written one. Takes too long to boot up my computer, and I'm too cheap to spend even the tiny amount of electricity leaving it on overnight.

Also, I like doodling, and I doodle sometimes in my dream journal.
