1. In order to fall asleep your body has to produce a compound called melatonin, which it does best in darkness, light inibits the production of said chemical, therefore having the light on would make it hard to fall asleep in the first place and then, if you managed to fall asleep, really easy to wake up as well (it wouldn't take much to wake you up).
2. It's impossible to sleep with your eyes open. Human anatomy. When you fall asleep, the muscles holding your eyelids open relax, and your eyes shut.
