Hi all, stumbled on the website today, and decided to join. Aussie, 21, and used to lucid dream occasionally when i was a young teenager. Been wanting to do some mental experiments on myself recently, and for that i need to start lucid dreaming again. After a week or so of trying for it, been making progress, and getting tantalisingly close. In one dream, a girl came up to me and told me she met me earlier on in my dream, and another had a different girl coming up to me to tell me " Don't get too startled or you'll wake up". Oh, the twisted pathways of my mind

Somehow, neither of those managed to push me into a completely lucid dream, but I'm sure i'll get there soon enough. Will be reading through the resources on the website, and poking around the forums a fair bit over the next week or so, assuming I have the free time. Looking forward to learning more about lucid dreams, and getting more ideas for what to do in them once i can achieve them frequently.

Welcome Simplex! You've come to the right place: the amount of advice and experiences we can get get from DV is really invaluable

From personal experience and from what I've read as well, when the mind isn't "used" to wake up in a dream, our brain pushes further into tricking us that what's happening is indeed real. At a later point, it will be much easier to become lucid, because you will be comfortable assuming that you might be dreaming and not let that doubt go.

Hope you have a good time here, and hold on to those ideas that you have: goals are very helpful in order to become lucid. Good luck!

Yup, goals are the main motivator. Zoth, the curious thing was that I ended up spending what felt like ~15 minutes debating wether or not I had actually seen the girl earlier on in my dream, and what it meant / why this had happened. I didn't question wether or not i was dreaming afterwards, i seemed to accept that i was, but without the full realisation of what it actually meant, and what it allowed me to do. Laughed at myself when i woke up, calling myself an idiot among other things. Baby steps, I'll get there eventually if i keep going for it.

      Thanks Wolf.

The only problem with this site sofar, is i want to keep looking around and reading, but it's keeping me from going to sleep. Dilemma.

      Welcome to Dreamviews, Simplex!

That sounds like an interesting dream; I've had a few like that before, among others. You're definitely not the only one with a subconscious that can sometimes do weird things.

When you're lucid, you're basically aware in the dream, so even if obvious events happen, if you're not aware you'll fail to become lucid. This is why it's important to practice RCing, awareness, and questioning if you're dreaming or not. Pick a few RCs (the nose-plug is known to be very reliable), and really look around to see if you're asleep, seeing if anything looks off, etcetera. Don't make the reality checks a habit though, because you might end up doing them mindlessly in your dreams. The mindset you have in reality will make you lucid; more often than not, RCs are done once you get that sneaking suspicion that you're in a dream.

So, yeah... If you haven't yet, be sure to check out the DV Wiki, and perhaps start up a dream journal. Being able to remember your dreams, and continuously practicing this, is important. Lucids tend to be more memorable than ordinary dreams, but based on my own experiences of forgetting many LDs, they can still be forgotten. You don't want to wake up in the morning and recall a snippet from a lucid, but fail to remember the rest.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post or send me a PM!
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Motivation is definitely important, along with confidence and determination.

Thanks Puffin and Arch. Had a look at some of those links already, and gotten a few good ideas out of them. Definitely going to try and keep in mind Grounding / RC's for when i need them... and Puffin, i question my reality enough already, but sure, SAT gives me another reason to.

What kinds of mental experiments did you have in mind to try? Anything interesting? Or is it top secret private stuff?

Thanks all. No luck last night, but recall is still improving rapidly. Will jot a few things down, and write up a DJ entry tomorrow when i have the free time.

      Robot_Butler - I don't mind sharing a few things on my to-do list.

Control of self: (The usual - flying, porting, shapeshifting)
Control of others: (actions are no big deal, i remember my DC's being agreeable in their actions when you expect them to be. I want to try out making them shift, among other things.
Control of the world: (The usual - the elements, mind over matter tricks like telekinesis and remodelling the dream world, eventually wanting to lead up to playing around with the physical laws, then going deeper into things like deforming the topology of the landscape, messing around with time dilation etc.)

Other miscellanious things: I want to find and talk with my subpersonalities. To clarify for those wondering... Ever notice how you act differently around different groups of people in your life? You wouldn't say any of those impressions of yourself that you give to people isn't the real you, but at the same time, they're not identical.

Quick example.... for younger people: you act very differently around your parents than around your friends that are your age. For the older generation: Your work life and home life would have you acting very differently. Both versions of you (and however many others of you there may be) are all undeniably you, but you know there are a multitude of differences between them.

So, i want to try and hunt around for mine while I'm dreaming, for fun. Think of it as a shared dream with the different facets of your own personality. I want to try out a few other things that probe my own self-awareness, but I'd like to keep them personal for now.

A few other random things i want to try are reading, writing, meditation (partially achieved this already when i was much younger, though only semi-lucid at the time. I sat on a swing-set for what felt like hours, it was a wonderful experience), as well as attempting to fall asleep and go into another lucid dream.
