Sometimes we will know it is a dream, but not fully understand the ramifications. Other times, we will feel fully lucid and engaged, but later realize we were still playing a role in the dream narrative. It is rare to have a dream where you feel fully in control of yourself, with the full capacity to reason, and access your real memories.

It is confusing, but this is exactly what is so fun to explore Our sense of "self" is amazingly flexible.
