      Greetings

I love the idea of lucid dreaming. But I never remember my dreams.

Over the years I've made the occasional attempt at doing a better job of remembering. I have tried dream journals but I just forget to use them. My own fault, I know. Still, maybe reading about all the awesome successes people talk about here will be motivating.

I have an iPad app in the App Store that I created that presents you with subliminal messages while you're web surfing or reading - it's called "Subliminal Browser" (I won't link to it here because my intention isn't to promote it here). I'm wondering if subliminal messages might be useful in lucid dreaming. Reminding you to make reality checks, for example. Something to experiment with.

      Anyway, Hi.

Subliminal message can work, but I would recommend practising your memory first.

Like for example when you go out and see your mailbox tell yourself "The next time I get home and see this mailbox I will associate it with a pink elephant". Then if you get home and see it and think "oh right pink elephant" you know that you have a good association memory.

Then start doing this on a bigger scale like the next time I hear someone complain about something I will think "I am dreaming!" and even make a reality check.

This is a really fun and useful thing to do, because each time you see a mailbox or hear someone complain, you will associate it with something.

And then one day you can say that you will reality check everytime you see a person with red hair or something else of your choosing and next time you dream, if you have practiced your memory enough you will reality check when you see the thing you choosed to associate it with. And when you have experienced your first lucid dream or just a more aware state of dreaming and are familiar with the hazy feeling of dreaming you can just say:
"The next time I am dreaming (feeling the hazy feeling) I will perform a reality check". And this increases your chance for a lucid dream

You can by then also visualize the hazy feeling of dreaming and tell yourself to associate that with doing a reality check for increased effect.

This method of associating things can be used to lots of other stuff. For example yesterday I wanted to remember to start the dishwasher when I got home, so I told myself the next time I see this garbage can outside my house, I will remember to associate it with the dishwasher. And I did! Hehe

      Sweet dreams

Hi MasterMind - thanks for the reply.

      > "The next time I am dreaming (feeling the hazy feeling) I will perform a reality check"

That's fascinating - so your brain knows at some level that it's a lucid dream, and you can train it to tell you.

I use reminders on my phone for everything, because my memory is generally pretty terrible. "Remind me when I get home to take out the garbage" and Siri will do exactly that. That doesn't really help for this, though.

I've been reading a book called "Moonwalking with Einstein", about memory, and specifically about those people who can remember the order of a deck of cards or other memory tricks. It's a fascinating book (it was recommended by Bill Gates). The spatial memory training that the book talks about sound a lot like what you're suggesting.

There's a spot in the book where they give you a list of 15 random objects and a technique for remembering them, that involves imagining seeing them in a familiar physical place (like your house or somewhere that you know very well). I was amazed that even now (about a week later) I can still remember all 15 of those things easily just by imagining walking through that place and "seeing" those things there.

Anyway, something to work on. Thanks.

      Welcome to the forum!

I seem to recall a news story about that or something similar and it seems like it would be a great way to improve recall. If you find it improves your memory let us know. We could recommend it to people having issue with recall.

If you have any lucid dreaming questions please let us know. Staff is here to help!

      Pleasant dreams!
