One of the key points during the WILD process, is staying calm. Fortunately, that should easily come with experience. If you are having trouble concentrating/forming your own dream scene, you can always let your mind wander and allow the dream scene to more or less, form on its own. Just passively listen/watch any HH you may have. Eventually the HI should began to form in full blown scenes/visions. At this point you are very close and you can either try to form your own scene (like you did before) or sit back for a bit longer and allow the dream to form itself.
As for the best times to WILD, for WBTB I suggest trying after 4+ hours of sleep. The most popular time seems to be after 6 hours of sleep. The further along into sleep you are, the longer your REM periods last. For naps, I suggest 1-5 hours after waking in the morning. I, personally, like to WILD during naps. Simply because I am too lazy to do WBTBs most of the time.
