      Forcing yourself to wake up?

I can't LD yet, but one thing that concerns me is that I might become lucid in a nightmare and be stuck along for the ride.

I know there are techniques for extending lucidity in dreams, but I was wondering if it's possible for a lucid dreamer to decide they want to wake up and make it happen? Would any attempt just lead to a false awakening?

No. You can easily wake yourself up from a dream, by either closing your eyes for a while then opening them, or by trying to feel yourself in bed.
      I'm back!

I just imagine my self waking up in my bed. Then, i just open my eyes really wide, and viola! I'm awake.

Can a nightmare occur often during lucid dreams? Or does it only happen when you think it will?

A nightmare is just its own dream. If you are lucid, then you can change it. Nightmares typically won't form during a lucid dream, because you aren't scared at all, you should be really happy
