I don't live in the 20th century anymore, I have a cell phone to give me the time.

What's with the hostility toward watches? I've never heard of them going out of style. I guess I don't use my phone or anything for telling the time though. It seems easier to me to glance at my wrist than have to take a phone or w/e out of wherever it is.

I could get a really nice looking fake one for around $20 right over in the city, but I never have yet. Not my thing I guess.

Watches really aren't out of style at all. Look at all of the people who wear them. Many to tell the time (its easier to glance down at your wrist than to take out your phone in many instances), but watches show tiers of class, luxury, and mainly jewelry. I wear my Rolex because it is an incredibly technologically complex timepiece and a true piece of jewelry.

So they're "look at me" pieces. Is that what rich people do?

      ummmm

I`ve been rich and broke in my life so I can tell you this

spending 7,000 $US on a watch even if you have millions in a bank account it`s plain stupid

      because it`s says:

      1. rob me please, right now
      2. I have to wear this, to draw attention
      3. I don`t know what money is good for, I don`t understand investing
      4. I am trying hard to impress people who don`t care about me at all

I worked in huuuuge company (prior to the crisis) that was in real estate, architecture design and selling, and most of the major customers, those 20% that provided the 80% yearly income, either didn`t wear watches, because they were not in a hurry, or they had 100$US watches, like these

and there was a guy, who said "I want to build a new school in the village where I was born" and he was wearing something like this

      nope, that`s marketing

you must stir up emotions, because people buy on emotional impulses and you must give them some logical reasons so they can justify them

you both would be better off buying black socks, you need them, I can tell you that for sure

I wear a $750 Gucci watch because my mom bought it for me for a birthday present. It seems like a complete waste of money to me, but I wear it anyway. I'd never have bought it myself. Before that I was buying myself $20 watches.

So should married women not wear their diamond wedding rings because it screams 'rob me'? And in terms of spending the money, expensive watches hold up their value incredibly well, like any other piece of jewelry, even if just for the precious metals and authentic movements.

I'm a watch guy, a lot of people are not, but i also happen to know extremely wealthy people (much more so than myself) who wear watches as collectors items and pieces of jewelry just like others collect cars or wear a gold or diamond necklace.

I don't need to be berated and patronized because of a gift I was given. And you may mock me sarcastically about being a gentleman and a scholar when I actually am. I'm majoring in both english/philosophy and economics at one of the most prestigious universities in the world next year (not an ivy, but on par with and/or ranked academically higher than some) which I was accepted into by merit alone.

I started this thread for those who love watches to post what they have, whether it be Rolex or Timex, not for people to explain why they believe watches are extinct (which logically and factually they are not).

      Thanks

Watches may not be as common as they once were but they certainly aren't out of style. Like SaMaster said, it's just jewellery - like a bracelet that doubles as a clock.

I'm going to go off on a tangent here but one thing that really bugs me is the fact that people make such a big deal out of engagement/wedding rings. When I get married, I'm going to make sure my wife-to-be gets me some plain old wedding band. I'll get her something expensive if she really wants it but there's no way I'm going to let her waste money on a ring that I'll probably lose when that money could be better spent on something we'll actually need like insurance or a couch.

next time when you want to impress the ladies, don`t buy an iPod touch, buy some italian shoes at that same price and wear black socks ... the ladies will think you are "upper class"

women dress from bottom to top, the reverse like man do and they have a shoe thing, like guys have a car / football thing

if woman knows about cars or football, you`ll be interested in her like crazy

the same goes with you wearing expensive shoes ... no, 300$ nike and adidas sneakers don`t count

if you wear crappy clothes and expensive watches and cellphones, women label you as try-hard schmuck ... and once you are labelled, you never get unlabelled

wear expensive shoes and good quality clothes, women don`t notice your 10 year old cellphone or 20$ watch, because they don`t give a shit about it, they care more of you being yourself, as in the best version of yourself ... and of course you having the balls to approach them

I got 8 years of being a member of the seduction community and you got just an "attitude"

      not bad for a start

^ Easy tiger, he just likes collecting watches and he wears them as a piece of jewellery simply for the sake of wearing them, not because he's trying to seduce women. It's the same thing as someone getting their ears pierced or wearing a necklace.

Watches are so chunky and impractical and you get thick watch-tan lines. Before they made cellphones, I honestly just didn't know what time it was. It was far easier to ask a stranger or look for a clock than be bothered with some excessive piece of equipment. But I'm sort of a minimalist. I don't even wear ties, formal for me means free of bloodstains and sheathed knife. Just kidding (I wish)

Cool, Roman Abramovich is on the Forbes 400, I know someone as well who is worth over a billion, and he does wear an expensive watch. Again, its only what people are into. You can't say case closed because one wealthy man doesn't wear a watch... someone else who is just as wealthy may wear one, or may not. Just like how 6% of the wealthiest Americans (top 1% I believe) own Hyundai's and 6% own Bentleys. The Hyundai people probably have planes and the such so they don't care about a nice, expensive car... but the Bentley people do.

Also, I actually do dress quite well. I'm going to college and obviously am not bringing my Rolex or any other expensive jewelry for that... or my expensive italian shoes...
most women (or at least the ones I would like to be with) don't only look at wealth (ESPECIALLY when I'm in college... I would just look like a complete a**hole on the first day with suede and leather LV shoes, a Rolex and a Façonnable overcoat). I definitely know how to dress, but as a teenager I'm obviously not going to go for that look every single day.

I don't think I've ever asked a girl/women what they thought of my watch... I just wear it for what it gives me. I truly like the look and style of the watch, and to me its really a piece of jewelry (instead of getting a necklace or bracelet).

Again, its all a matter of what you like or don't like. If you don't wear a watch because you just use your phone to tell the time, thats great, don't post here. But as you can see, there are a lot of members who do wear/like watches.

Honestly, the Rolex I have is the lower end of the brand... I'm not trying to brag about it. I was just excited that I got it as a graduation present. But I've seen threads about this on car forums, mac/computer forums, etc... I'm interested in watches and wanted to see if other DV members were as well and discuss and share.

      Thats all.

And @GavinGill, I don't think I was referring to you when I said extinct. I knew you were just kidding... And I was just using the wedding ring as an example... it could be anything (diamond necklace, gold bracelet, earings, etc etc).

Can we just get back on topic? It's truly foolish to argue about something so subjective.

bro, why can't you drop it? I don't care if you name people who are wealthy who don't wear nice watches. lol, you just don't get it. At least spell daddy right and use proper grammar....

I also don't need you to give me money lessons (or my parents for that matter... my dad came from absolute sh*t in NY to what he has know... and my godfather was chased out of Germany by Hitler... he had nothing, now he is 84 and STILL running 11 businesses which gross multi-millions a year.). Please, you are not doing me a favor by, again, patronizing me because I am younger and you think you can teach me something. I DO NOT CARE... I will do well in my own way I already know that, and if somehow I don't, then so what, it wasn't meant to me. Your little youtube video isn't going to change what I grow up to be.

Can a MOD please delete this senseless argument so that we can get back to the topic? IF YOU DON'T LIKE WATCHES THEN JUST DON'T POST HERE... its really quite simple. I'm sure I have a lot more to learn, but I don't need to hear it from someone on an internet forum who I don't know at all and who really knows absolutely NOTHING about me except for what I've shared on this forum (which truly isn't much of my own complex personality and being...)

This is not even a joke. I have this watch. If I find it I'll show an actual picture.

My mum bought me a watch at christmas but I never wear it.. I used to wear one all the time though a few years ago. It wasn't expensive though. I really don't see the point in over-priced things when they can break so easily. My friend's mum just bought Vera Wang plates and I see that as really stupid because think how easy it is to accidently drop a plate. I'd rather buy something reasonably priced and not worry about it than buy something just so I can feel a false sense of luxury and worry about what happens when I drop in the sink.

      Guys guys guys.,

This is not a conversation over luxury or money. It's a conversation of what watch you wear. He didnt say that the watch had to be geargeo armoni. Or gucci. Or whatever else I can't spell.

It just has to be a watch. If you think that watches are stupid, or buying expensive things are stupid. Then go open a thread about that. But leave this thread alone and on topic.
