Okay, that's good to know. It said you hadn't been on in months, since you added me originally, so I thought you must have blocked or deleted me.

This one is pretty useless. Flowering plants come in two main types, monocots and dicots. The leaves of monocots generally have parallel veins, and they usually have petals in multiples of 3. But dicots' leaves have branching veins, and their petals usually come in multiples of 4 or 5. So you can predict things like, if you see a leaf of a flower with parallel veins, the flower will probably have petals in multiples of 3.

I dunno about this one. I'm knowledgeable enough, but I read the other day in a skeptics magazine that this isn't true at all. (The underlined/italicised bit).

Also, with some people who have this reaction, if you touch their face in a certain spot (where the trigeminal nerve is) you can make them sneeze.

      Ok now the blatant bs.

Source? I know I've always dreamed a lot and I don't think I'm incredibly intelligent.

Ok.... wtf? Have you ever even looked at a baby's eyes?
Eyes have less pigment in babies. But that doesn't automatically mean blue.

Yeah, which studies? I've read that most men are probably bi too.

      .....no.

      Study?

Again. No. My dog cries when I don't give it attention. As in tears and everything. I'm sure there are a lot more animals that do this too.
I haven't witnessed it. But chimpanzees most likely would.

      yes and no

each and every photon is so unique that they create a different universe around them

this is why photons can pass through each other, because they don`t exist for each other, every photon has it`s own version of reality

a photon has a mass only in his own bubble of reality

and these bubbles are so small, that they can`t contain time, so entropy doesn`t apply to them, making photons immortal

once a photon is born it will vibrate at the same frequency like forever

      headache???

Redheads are becoming more and more rare as the years go by. Which is an absolute shame since redheads are absolutely amazing.

The legal age of consent in Canada was raised from 14 to 16 in 2008. There are "close in age" exceptions though. A 14 or 15 year old can consent to sexual activity with a partner as long as the partner is less than five years older and there is no relationship of trust, authority or dependency or any other exploitation of the young person. A 12 or 13 year old can consent to sexual activity with another young person who is less than two years older and with whom there is no relationship of trust, authority or dependency or other exploitation of the young person.

Bone Thugs N Harmony is the most creative force to ever hit the world of Hip Hop. They literally broadened the rap world's horizons and sparked a cultural phenomenon overnight, and they reinvented the overall sound of the entire genre with each album release from 1994 to 2000. They stood out so far apart from every other artist that many hip hop fans didn't even want to acknowledge them as rappers because their music was so unconventional... And now, for the most part, their music is almost entirely devoid of any originality (aside from a few elements of their signature sound ) and they sound somewhat bland and generic; mere shadows of their former glory. Pity.

If it is, that sucks. Redheads are beautiful. Even if their face isn't amazingly attractive, their red hear just makes

I was going to post that. Except it's the smaller "flowers" inside the flower. Like on a sunflower. Which is another interesting fact in itself, those little tufts in the middle of a flower are actually classified as flowers themselves hehe

why the hell did plants come up with flowers in the first place?

it takes a lot of resources to create them, most plants die after they have flowered, because of this

      anybody? I`m curious

Because certain insects are attracted to them because they look like them.

I think every flower has an insect that looks similar to it.
So the insect tries to mate with the flower and therefore they just end up
      spreading the pollen.

Which leads to the next amazing fact. The Angraecum Sesquipedale (Darwin's Orchid) has an incredibly long spur. When Darwin was shown these, he hypothesised that there must be a moth with an equally large probosics, people thought he was insane, but turns out they found that moth. Xanthopan Morgani (Morgan's Sphinx).

A similar thing has been discovered with Dendrophylax lindenii (American Ghost Orchid), which is very rare, and the moth which pollinates it is also rare - the Giant Sphinx Moth

I'm pretty sure. I know that they aren't going "extinct" as some people say but I've read that they will be more rare a few decades from now. Hopefully not, right? I'd hate for my grandkids to miss out. Unless... I marry one. :O

Red hair isn't even exactly a simple recessive gene. It's a bit more complicated than that.

Since flowers have become a topic... you can often tell what type of animal pollinates a flower by the flower's color and shape. For example, bees are attracted to blue, purple and yellow flowers; birds like red flowers; moths like white flowers. (That's very general, I remembered some from Biology and have only done quick Google searches to verify the examples). Also, remember that the pollinator needs to get its mouth to the flower's nectar. If you see a flower with a wide opening, it might be pollinated by a bat or something else that requires that much space. If you see an elongated flower with a narrow opening, a hummingbird might pollinate it, or something else that could fit like the moth tommo posted above.

Unrelated, I'll bring up this creepy fish, the Anglerfish (Bio stuff keeps coming back to me!):

There are two interesting things about it. First, it lures its prey by hanging a "fishing rod" with a glowing end near its mouth. Second, the males of the species are small in comparison, and when they reach maturity they attach themselves to a female and are basically attached to her for the rest of their lives to provide her with an immediate source of sperm.

Yes, in prehistoric times there were no flowers. Plants were either related to ferns, conifers, or other evergreens. As the age of the dinosaurs progressed, these huge creatures would eat vast amounts of plant material. The plants couldn't keep up and grow fast enough. They needed an edge, and that is when deciduous trees and flowering plants happened. They could grow and reproduce much faster. If it wasn't for dinosaurs we might not have roses.

I love how all these things lead me to other things I have read before.

The oldest known tree, which was nicknamed Prometheus, was a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine. I think they've found older ones now though.
But this at the time was the oldest. Alas, some graduate students cut it down because they were studying the age of trees in the area, and upon doing so,
realised it was 4862 years old.

Also, the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia Nobilis) species is one of the oldest known species of plant still living.
The oldest fossils are 200 million years old. It was thought to be extinct until 1994 when David Noble, a park ranger, was bush walking and found a group of them.
There are probably less than a hundred trees still living in the wild, and their location is kept secret.
Further, the specimens analysed are genetically indistinguishable, and so it is possible that their numbers at one point were down to maybe only one or two trees!

I've been here for a few months and have about 1000. So combined we need 500 times the amount of posts I've ever made, which seems like a lot. What's the average number of posts per day? Does anyone have that info?
