      Driving Test

I'm taking my driving test next week so I can get my license. Any tips? How was your test?

      Don't run a red light.

I did that and got through, but I was lucky.

My sister failed for taking a left turn too slowly, and you get passed for running a red light?!?

I found the whole "stopping before a yellow light" being an absolute pain in the ass, so in case you ever run into the same trouble I did just remember this: If you can't come to a safe stop, then you can drive through. This means you shouldn't have to hammer the brakes in order to stop or else you might cause an accident. Also where I'm from, the "don't walk" (or the red hand) signal will flash 5 times before it turns yellow.

Other than that the rest is pretty easy. Stay on the most right side of the lanes, come to a complete stop at any intersection keep both hands on the wheel etc. It's not as hard as one may anticipate.

stop at the stop sign. Don't go up to where you can actually see because they'll get you for that...
stupid yeah, I know. And the guy also got me for straddling the line of a right turn before getting
over into the right lane... Guess he didn't realize I was driving a mercury.

The guy basically said that the rest of the test went well, and I drove pretty well, especially considering that I was able to keep my focus after making a massive fuck up. What happened was I was checking so much behind me before taking the right turn, that I didn't notice the light changing. Instead of hitting the brakes though, I just ran it, so I didn't block the traffic or cause a dangerous situation.
Take this all with a grain of salt or something though. The guy was basically the best you could wish for, and my driving instructor told me afterwards that if I had had any other examinator or whatever you call it, and made the same mistake, I would've failed.

About doing a slow left turn, that is actually very critical. If you hang out in the middle for too long, you might end up causing some very dangerous situations and heavily disrupt traffic too.

Drive like a grandma going to church. Check mirrors and blind spots. If something weird comes up that you are unfamiliar with, ask the examiner. Practise parking if you suck at it.

Don't drive slowly if you are not used to it, to be honest. Just drive like how you'd normally drive. The biggest problem in the driving test is being nervous, in my opinion. Unless you literally have problems with certain things, in which case it is okay you fail, and you should instead take more lessons.

I would unfortunately get immediately failed for speeding. And gunning it on a green light. My two favorite things about driving.

You haven't even gotten your license and you are already speeding?

      What is wrong with you?

Everybody here drives 10-20 km/h over the speed limit. If you do that during your test you'll fail. It's frustrating to have traffic zooming by you and getting impatient, but during your test, keep it below the speed limit.

Understandable in that case. I don't consider "driving at the speed limit" slow. I thought by slow you meant going 20km/h below the limit.

If you go the speed limit, on the express ways around here you will virtually get run off the road. I'd say 80mph is the average speed.

Go at the speed limit, always. You never need to break it, you don't get anything out of breaking it, and unless driving at the limit creates a dangerous situation, keep your cool and hold the limit.

      You get:

      A: You get fun.
B: You get to your destination faster.
C: You stay with the flow of traffic, instead of being an obstruction.

If you are a halfway decent driver you should have no problem going 80 on a freeway.

When you're driving on your own, I say go with traffic pace. Its kinda dangerous if you don't
regardless of what the speed limit is. However, while your taking your test, you probably want
to go the speed limit. No slower, no faster.

Well in Denmark, 80 mph/130 km/h is fairly normal for the freeways, so I don't see a problem with that, but you most likely won't be hitting the freeway during your test, as this is very time consuming and won't allow him/her to get a complete overview of your abilities.

If you want to discuss the subject of driving fast, let's just say that unless you're driving very long distances, driving faster will very rarely create any benefit. In most cases, any time you seemingly safe, will be spent waiting at a red light or some other such obstacle. You might be ahead a few cars, but in the end, if you're driving 4 kilometers to the mall or whatever, you will probably save less than a minute by going over the limit, unless you're driving dangerously fast.

"Getting fun" out of driving fast, I can understand this, but if you hold that up against the risk of not being able to avoid an accident, getting a speeding ticket and being fuel inefficient, the "fun" argument kind of falls apart.

Staying with the flow of the traffic is entirely meaningless. On most roads where people substantially break the speed limit, you will have dual lanes, allowing you to sit in a lane where you can easily drive at the speed limit, without causing trouble.

Imagine a driver going 20 km/h below the speed limit where you are and all the problems that that would cause. That's equivalent to a guy going the speed limit here since everyone is used to driving faster. It's definitely safer to speed (within reason).

Plus Denmark is crazy small, you can probably get anywhere in the country within a day going 30 .

Edit: Also where I live we have lots of long, single lane rural roads with speed limits between 50 and 90 km/h.

Michigan requires you to go on the freeway on the road test.

This has more to do with a shitty infrastructure than anything though. Your country sucks, yatta yatta.

That's awesome that you get to go on the freeway during your test. In Denmark, the test is usually 30 minutes and most of it is spent driving around town. I took my test in Århus, the second biggest city in Denmark, with also the second highest number of people failing their driving test, Copenhagen being the highest.

Getting on the highway is pretty important here since you pretty much need to to get anywhere. Merging on the highway is an important test item.

I practiced paralel parking today. I think I got it down. Now I just need to make sure I don't speed and make sure I don't fuck up big time.

How hard is it? I mean really, if you are not able to constantly flick your view between the module panel, the road and the rear mirror, you are not fit for driving in my opinion.
