DIY or barber?

I go to a hairdresser, a fancy one.

My hair is really thick and frizzy. I don't know if I've ever seen anyone else with hair like mine so it would be hard to describe. When it's dry it puffs out too much, mostly at the bottom where there's less weight dragging it down, so it ends up looking horrible. For the last few years I've almost always just worn a ponytail in public.

So that's why I can't do it myself. I need my hair to be layered, at least a bit. The last time I tried to do it myself it just didn't turn out right. I tried doing it the common-sense way. Making 'layers' so that the outside layers are shorter than the inside, but I obviously did something wrong because it just didn't look right in the end. Then the next time I went to the hair dresser she pointed out that she could tell I had tried to do it myself and that it was choppy and I felt bad, so I don't want to try that again.

They didn't do much layering last time I went. I think next time I'm going to demand that they layer it as much as possible.

I go to the barber every 3 or 4 weeks. I've been going to the same guy for like 8 or 9 years, I think. I'd do it myself but I doubt it'd look presentable.

Ah, these bloody professionals lol. You can't take a car to a mechanic without them knowing exactly what you've done to it. You can't take your computer to a repair man without them knowing exactly what you've been doing on/to it. Now you can't even go to a hairdresser without them knowing your secrets!

I have a family member who is a hairdresser, so I've always had one. I don't really need one now since I'm growing out my hair, even though I probably should get it trimmed once in a while to cut off dead ends. I'll probably just do that myself if I really need to.
