Anyone getting or already have windows 8?

I'm planning on downloading it tomorrow, I don't know why people say it's so bad when it has everything windows 7 has and more. Maybe window 8 features could be glitched but little things don't bother me.

I've tried it on my company's computer and I actually quite like it. But it has been days since I left the job so I'm back to loving my Windows 7 again. Windows 8 is faster than 7, my only concern is the range of "apps" it decided to launch together with it.

Windows 8 is nice and I recommend installing it. As Carrot said, there are big speed increases. It's generally more polished, the interface looks nice (in my opinion anyway). And I thought I'd never get used to the Metro start screen but I did after about a week. My recommendation is to try it to see if you like it.

I never thought I would get used to it too. But I still did and I loved it once I got the hang of it. I'll probably wait for most programs to be compatible with Windows 8 before I shift to it. Besides my laptop is still functioning properly so I don't see the hurry to get a new one yet. I'm considering a Windows 8 mobile now, after I fell in love with the computer version.

Now, I can't deny that I was originally quite put off by the idea of moving away from XP. However, having finally gotten settled in to 7 (I never once owned a vista box), I'm definitely not looking forward to having to re-learn the entire layout of all the built-in utilities (when I first started using 7 it took me forever to o anything because I had to re-learn how everything was organized in the control panel). It's neat and all that they're trying to come up with a UI that is uniform across PCs, tablets, and phones, but I really don't like the idea of the PC being subjugated to navigating a touch interface with the mouse pointer. Oh, glad I tried to run my Win8 VM tot take a closer look at things though, I just realized that its virtual drive was taking up 30 GB on C:, which until a minute ago was getting strangely large I'm reinstalling it to another drive, so I'll take a look when that's done (I forgot what password I used on the other, lol)

I tried the consumer preview version of the operating system, and that completely put me of ever getting it voluntarily. The interface is clearly not designed for regular computers.

Yeah...Windows 8 is going to blow chunks for gaming purposes. And that was the only reason to ever consider using Windows in the first place... But now with Steam being actively ported to Linux, I don't see much need to switch back.

I wouldn't mind seeing gaming keep moving into Linux territory. It sure would make it more palatable for current Windows users, at the least.

XP was great, Vista sucked, Windows 7 was great. Now Windows 8 is out and it's different from previous OS's. The only problem with Windows 8 I have encountered so far is you need a microsoft/live account to use the apps and you can't log out of it. Imagine if you're using a public computer. Other than it's made to resemble a touch screen, the interface on the desktop itself still looks pretty much like Windows 7, except for the hidden search bar on the right side. I think they have changed the way the windows are arranged. When we press Win + Left on Windows 7, the current window we're using now occupies half the screen on the left. I've always found that useful when I need to do research. But I got no clue what Win + Left does on Windows 8. The last time I was playing with the screens on Windows 8, it either occupies 1/4 of the screen or 3/4 of the screen, unless you have a very big screen, it's going to make reading tough. Well the best thing about Windows 8 is, it's made safe for work. Like I had mentioned earlier, the window can take up to a minimum of 1/4 of the screen, if you just slide it all the way to either ends of the screen, it'll vanish and there wouldn't even be an icon on the taskbar showing a program is opened if you're using an app (or you can just switch to the main screen instantly by pressing the windows button). There might be tons of other problems, like there are for every new released thing, but I feel that Windows 8 has its pros too. I've recently created a 'barebones' XP installation on my pc and will be sticking with it for as long as I can as its so bloody fast compared to a regular XP install I need as much CPU & RAM is I can squeeze out of my PC for what I use it for and Vista, 7 & 8 just hog far too much of the systems resources.

If you find Windows inaccessible at times, and Linux to be very reliable, why aren't you using Linux more? It's pretty liberating once you break off from that dependency and realize your computer is actually yours. I've never been able to get into linux. I find the transition to be very hard. I'm not exactly sure why. And it's not that it's to difficult or such, I've had a headless linux box running for years. It just isn't comfortable as a desktop install. Depends on the flavor. Fedora is pretty great for modern desktop purposes, though it takes some setting up out of the box. Ubuntu is well supported, easy enough to use, and fairly popular, but I honestly wouldn't recommend it as a primary OS--too wonky at times. That said, Debian does have an excellent offering in Mint, which can give you a clean, easily customizeable environment that can fit whatever needs you have, and as a bonus has everything ready to go at install (mp3 support, flash, etc.).

There are times when your OS just screws up, so my friend placed unbuntu inside his thumbdrive to act as a portable OS to help other people save their files. Since the computer is still able to boot up, except that we can't access the OS inside it. I know nothing about ubuntu, my friend is the IT guy.
