Tell me how you plan to actually keep at your resolutions

I figured this merits another thread. All resolutions are a bunch of good intentions. But anyone who's ever tried anything change-related will know, good intentions are never enough. In order to really keep it up, it has to be built into the process, because your will-power alone will not get you there (and you KNOW it ).

So, how are you all going to help make your resolutions easier to stick with, not just for the first three weeks of the year, but for the rest of your lives?

Well this year I don't really have any resolutions. But in the past what I've done is basically just make the resolution into a habit through sheer force of will. Once it's a habit, it doesn't really take much willpower. The whole process seems to get a little easier every time that I resolve to do something. I guess it helps to know that I've done something similar in the past.

One of the "tricks" that I have used for certain resolutions is to schedule time for whatever it is I want to get done. For example, this past semester my scheduled time to go running was from around 4pm-6pm. I made sure not to plan anything else during that time period so that when the time came, I had no excuse not to go run. As mentioned above, once you've let it develop into a habit, it doesn't really take much willpower at all. It feels weird not to.

My resolution doesn't begin for another six months. The purpose of postponing it is to avoid the commercialism that has developed around New Year's. I'll tell you in June.

By staying in the yellow zone of comfort.

Just sort of push myself into things I want to be comfortable doing, and start to do it. Eventually I should become comfortable with it at some point.

Heh indeed, cyanide is a great way to not die from cancer

Really, the goal is not to use your will-power to go against the grain of your autopilot, but to build a better autopilot.

a "better" autopilot would be a silent one who doesn't move an inch to save himself.

Give my friend $2,000 each month. For every month I complete a goal of mine (I have many more than I posted in that other thread) She'll give me 1,000 back. Upon the completion of my goals for 2009...I get the rest. However failing to complete the monthly goals doesn't end well.
