It sounds like you were vaguely aware, but you weren't THAT aware. Keep working on awareness and really being skeptical as to whether or not you could be dreaming. Right now you could, since dreams feel and look extremely real while we aren't lucid.

We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Looking at your hands isn't a very reliable RC. So far mine looked blurry at best. In my opinion, the easiest RC is pinching your nose (so that you couldn't breathe in reality) and trying to breathe. When you are in a dream you will still be able to breathe, because your physical body is breathing normally. You could even breathe under water while in a dream. Important is not to expect a result, but just do it (as dreams tend to go along your expectations).

Do that RC many times during the day in order to make it a habit. This may result in you becoming lucid more often.

Unless you EXPECT your hands to have extra fingers, or being able to breathe through your nose, lol. That makes it easier.

Good way to become delusional on the long run.

But that's actually the only possible way for the RC of the main character of Inception to work. Normally, you would expect a spinning top to topple over after some time. He would have to expect it not to in order for it to work. Though he is certainly paranoid enough to do that.
