Yes we have all been there.
Over the years I have come up with some ways to dig up old memories not presently being recalled. All things are recorded but retrieving them is the trick. You have to find things that parallel things in your dream, these will connect you to other bigger memories and finally to the whole dream. Basically you are breaking into your own mind like some kind of mental/spiritual safe-cracker. So lets see if we can break back into your memories.
1. Never tell yourself "I can't remember!" Your mind will do as you say. The negative phrase will come up spontaneously but then simply say to yourself "I will remember!" even if you don't really believe it yet.
2. Try to remember "why I should remember this dream." Was it especially lucid, long, sexual, strange?
3. You say long which is the hardest because anything could have happened. So we will have to run down things common to your dreams and see if you hit on something. Try to picture these things. Think if you dreamed about flying, your friends, family, home, pets, zombies, work, video games, or great scenery. Look around the DJ's and see if anything jogs your memory.
4. Then there's any scenarios you usually dream about; battles, monsters, at work, being lost, sex, driving, eating, painting, etc. Try to think if you did any of these things in that dream. The "folder" for that dream exists in your memory, you just have to find a related link to get you in. You have to remember something here to move onto the next step. If it is not happening just keep brainstorming till you hit on something. Let it go for a while then try again. Don't get stressed over it or you will create a mental block.
5. Once you remember something your in that "folder", try to find related things in that category or thing. If it is work then see if you can remember the look of the place, or any people you contacted, or things you saw. If you remembered your childhood friend then think if their siblings, parents, pets, or house. Relations, relations, relations, connect them to more and more.
6. If you are STILL drawing a blank try Stream of Consciousness. Try to imagine what a great dream, this dream you had, would be like. " I would dream that I am flying and..." and just keep talking to yourself imagining. The task is to let your memories bubble to the surface through an activity your mind thinks is related. You may come to a point where you say, "Oh I think I remember that!" go with it and think of what was next.
7. You are still not there yet? Try to recall this dream in your next LD! Dreams are much easier to recall in the dream state.
Let me know how it goes or PM me if you need help.
