      Question Indistinct, Uncontrollable LD

So I was attempting to WILD last night, and I actually succeeded, in a way! I descend into the dream and am fairly lucid, aware that it's a dream. However, the surroundings in the dream weren't anything recognisable, but rather a fuzzy, multicoloured mess.

I shout a few things along the lines of 'increase clarity!' and it does get sharper, but the surroundings are still comprised of weird coloured shapes. I tried closing my eyes, imagining I was somewhere else, and opening them again, a few times, but that had no effect either. Eventually I dissolved the dream out of frustration.

So I'm just wondering, has anything like this happened to any of you before, and what's the best way to deal with it and establish a more coherent environment within the dream?

      Congrats on the WILD!

There's a few different reasons as to why you entered a fuzzy, less-than-vivid dream. First, you might have WILDed at the wrong time of your sleep cycle; it's best to attempt a WILD right before a REM phase starts so there's still lots of dream to be formed. You could've just had bad luck, too. I've had DILDs where the dream was very dark and I couldn't see a thing. If you end up in a blurry dream, you can try strongly imagining a dream scene but if that doesn't work, the other option is to wake yourself up and attempt a DEILD. Two things can happen with the DEILD - firstly, you can end up being unable to enter another dream, which could confirm whether you were at the end of a REM cycle, which isn't the best for WILDing. Or, you could enter a new, more stable dream.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

I often find myself in areas that are blurry - for me usually dark (gray, black or brown). That happens to me for example every time I walk through a mirror using it as a gateway. But it can also happen in other situations. There are two ways that work for me to end up in a "proper" area. Either I start moving - like walking or swimming, until I get somewhere.
Or I give a wish/command to be brought to a certain location. In that case it is like I start flying on autopilot. My flight speeds up when I repeat the command.

Thanks for the advice - Yeah that could be a good explanation, I wasn't exactly focusing on any time in particular... What'd be the best time to get the most vivid dreams then?

It really depends on you; it's recommended that you wake up in the middle of the night after 4-6 hours of sleep, or go back to bed 4-6 hours after waking up in the morning. Myself, though, I find getting to SP easier when I nap 3 hours after waking. You'll have to experiment a bit to see what works for you.

Try drinking lots of water before bed; you'll end up waking after a REM cycle in the middle of the night; at this time you can do a WBTB and once you get back into bed, your next one will be very soon!
