False Awakening from a Lucid Dream

      Hi everybody!

I'm pretty new to the LD, DreamViews scene and, after having my first LD (that I can remember) right after I first joined DreamViews about a month or two ago, I finally had another one last night. It was brief but weird as hell! Plus, I think I had a false awakening, but maybe someone can chime in and confirm. If you want to just read my questions, you can skip to the bottom paragraph or two.

Here's the dream in a nutshell: I was in my house, sneaking around in the dark because, for some reason, it seemed like some of my friends from high school were outside patrolling the house and searching for me. Eventually, I was able to sneak out without anyone noticing, and started walking around in my "neighborhood," which didn't look anything like my neighborhood in real life in hindsight. Of course, at this point in the dream, I accepted everything as being normal. I came across a small pavilion where the same high school friends that were looking for me a minute ago were now sitting at a picnic table. They all seemed preoccupied, but I was instantly gripped with fear as I walked past them because I knew I had just gotten away from them. I stopped, looked back at them for a split second, and they bolted out of their seats and rushed at me. When I turned around, a red Jeep was sitting in front of me with one of the doors open, so I ran to it, hopped in, and the driver sped off. It turns out that the driver was one of my college roommates, the passenger in the front was one of my classmates that looks very Jersey Shore-ish, and my mom was sitting beside me in the back seat. A weird combo of people, but I didn't question it for a few seconds.

The next part is something that I'm still struggling to understand. I've been practicing RCs by looking at my hands for days now and yet, while I was in the dream, a thought came to my mind: "I wonder if I'm dreaming." I don't know what prompted it, but I mentally told myself, "To prove it, I'll look at my friend's eyes in the rearview mirror." I did just that, and he looked absolutely normal. Then I looked at my passengers to be sure. Amazingly, it seemed like they exploded with color... as if they were being painted in ostentatious watercolors by an invisible hand. The guy in the passenger seat had turned into a clown with a red nose, though I don't think I intended him to. My mom had turned into a different girl who's skin had turn a vibrant emerald green while her hair had turned white. I was almost overcome with amazement that this was happening... everything in the dream world became rainbow-colored and strikingly beautiful. I looked out the window past the people and saw trees turning deep orange and red; all of them seemed to glow and pulse with energy. But, I felt like I was losing the dream feeling from excitement and started to shake in my seat to see if I could stay in the dream world. Though I was sitting in a car seat, I tried to spin with my eyes closed even though I felt like it would be in futility since... let's face it... it's pretty tough to spin in a car seat.

After a few seconds of trying to spin, I opened my eyes and was in my family's car (but still in a dream)... no longer the Jeep. My mom was now in the driver seat, my dad in the passenger seat. I remember "waking up" and REALLY wanting to tell my mom that I just had a lucid dream - I could still remember the prior lucid dream and was running it through my mind even though I was STILL dreaming. They got out of the car at some point and went into a rest stop, while I got out and stood in front, wondering if I should tell my mom or not. Not long after that, I *actually* woke up in my bed.

Question: Did I have a false awakening? I just started reading about false awakenings today. I could still remember my lucid dream while in the *next* dream world, but didn't realize I was still dreaming. Is this anyone has any experience with? It just blew my mind - it's been a while since my last LD and, afaik, my first false awakening both in one night!

False awakenings can cause this - I've experienced this before. However, I do not believe this is a false awakening. False awakenings are where you wake up in your bed - not where you end up in a different situation.

Dreams cam full us with false memories in order to progress the main storyline. You should do a reality check if you ever question the realm you're in.

Hmm, well, I dreamt that I woke up in my family's car. It was a different "situation," but I did actually feel like I woke up.

Also, are you saying that I had a false memory of a LD, meaning that I didn't actually have one? Not sure I entirely follow you.

I'm not saying that you didn't have a lucid dream - I'm saying that dreams can fill your subconscious mind with false memories to keep you on track with the storyline. It's one of the reasons why we may fail to realize we're dreaming - you think you know how you got there, when really, you don't.

You thought you 'woke up' from a previous dream - that right there is a false memory. you didn't wake up, you instead just changed the dream scene.
