Arrow Too many video games = lousy lucid dreams?

Well, this obviously is not the case for everyone; just to make that clear.

However I have noticed this from personal experience and wonder if anyone else may remember the same troubles...

Last night once again my lucid dream resembled DOOM, not as in I was killing caca demons with a shotgun, but the fact that the textures looked like 8-bit graphics from an old video game. Maybe this has nothing to do with the amount of games I play, or the fact that I am a game design student as well.... but what the hell?

Maybe my brain needs a new video card...

Any suggestions or opinions would be appreciated!

Funny. One of the first dreams that I recorded in my DJ had 8-bit graphics. It was like one of the first Zelda games.

Hmm. Actually, I think it was yesterday, I had a dream where I was in something that seemed very much like GTA San Andreas, I was driving a fire fighter kindof car, using random things as ramps. I remember it looked like GTA down to the detail that the world would 'pop' up when going at high speeds, because the game had to load.

I think it's just because the brain thinks it's in the game, and thus makes the same graphic. But yeah, pretty annoying. But I can't imagine having a lucid dream like that :S

One time after playing an unhealthy amount of Counter Strike:Source, like 7-8 hours, i had dreams all night where i was in CS. It was really tedious and i do not like dreaming about video games. Although I was getting some amazing head shots.

I've always wanted to know that. If it's a dream that uses a game environment, and when you turn the corner, what would your mind do? Continue the schema and create hallways with that same 'game' type feel, or make a real hallway?

Dreams are made of what you experience throughout the day. Sometimes I can waste an entire game playing video games and if that's all I do, that's what my dreams will be about.

I would have to agree that too many video games do equal bad lucid dreams. For instance, I got a copy of NHL 07 for my PSP, and have been playing it obsessively for the past week. Last night, when I had a long lucid dream, I could have done anything, but instead, I surfed the net for the whole time I was in the dream. I feel like I wasted a huge opportunity. Maybe my technology obsession carried over into my dream.

Yeah I also have many video game dreams, it's cool sometimes but pretty annoying most of the time. I'd rather have a real life dream.

Try to meditate before going to sleep. That would erase the negative effets of videogames.

If you're playing good video games it's not so bad.

Playing cheap repetitive flash games on the other hand makes for the most boring repetitive dreams. In my dreams, I've been running through the same Tower Defense dungeon now for a week. Just awful.

      Aye, I agree on that.

Actually, I've had quite alot of good dreams where my Brain manages to fit alot of games together.

I've had one that started out as doing some parkour, suddenly it was GTA where we would try to parkour on the cars. Then I got thrown into a cave by the car, now it was an Oblivion related dream, with vampires. However still with some GTA elements.

I've also had a few Assassins Creed + GTA mixes.

      I don't play GTA at all anymore, why do I dream of it? ;_;

I just awoke from a dream about Halo 3 multiplayer, well I awoke in my dream and then awoke again in real life . I have had a fair amount of dreams about video games and what this one made me realise is that:

      A) I dream that im playing the game with a controller or keyboard or whatever and that the character im controlling is also myself. Its multiple levels of immersion. Perhaps peter moore was on to something when he said playing xbox 360 would be like being in a lucid dream

      B) The "graphics" of the world that you are in are actually what the game looks like. For example in the halo 3 one last night/this morning, I was on some sort of snow "map". The snow looked like it did from Halo 3, the lighting and HDR had the same effect from halo 3. And when I got knocked down from one of the grav lifts, my teammates that had just respawned ran past me and their footprints looked the same in the snow. Its basically the games graphics engine in real life resolutions.

I recommend not playing Unreal tournament 3 before sleeping.
I played it for a whole day and my dreams were so crazy and fast paced, every corner i took i was already in pieces...

Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

I play a lot of video games, so I tend to dream about them a lot too. One thing I've noticed is that, in a lot of my dreams, I'm using a keyboard to control what I do; in other words, I'm not physically doing things. My dream keyboard activity commonly consists of shortcut combinations for some reason.

Not just video games, but anything repetitive.

It used to happen to be when I had a job as a dishwasher. After a really busy night I would come home and dream about washing dishes. OUCH! Or when I was programming and doing 12 hour days trying to meet an impossible deadline I would dream in code. That was a little better though, because I even figured out how to do somethings that were tripping me up a couple of times. It didn't make for a great night of sleep, but I would drive in to the office and do in a few minutes what I had been hacking away at for hours the night before.

The subconscious mind is surprisingly easy to program.

Ohh, I find whenever I'm having a dream about a game its without controllers, keyboards, etc... I've also had some quite strange but fun dreams about video games....most of the dreams are about random war-based games I've played and it can be fun flying around in a spitfire..

Absolutely. I think if you can play games moderately its not a problem, but I have an addictive personality so I just quit them entirely. They were getting into my dreams and stopping my lucids, especially cod4 cuz its so addictive .

i really dont think that video games are a bad influence on your lucid dreaming, although it IS indeed an influence. i love the influence my games put on my dreams. i'll find myself dreaming about majestical scenery and magical adventures similar to my game experiences... maybe it depends on what kinda games ur into>?? lol i myself am into old style RPG's like legend of legaia and also games like zelda.... all zelda games are the shit.... hahahaha =p

Halo 3 has destroyed many of my dreams. I go to bed with the images running through my mind. My dreams are the same way, just random Halo play that has no significance to anything. I get so pissed in the morning when all I remeber experiancing is Halo. I never become lucid in a Halo dream and I rarely ever have any control.
I'm getting more pissed just thinking about it now.
