Interesting, sounds almost like the Golden Compass "God"

One thing, though - how do you rationalize karma when 'good' and 'bad' are so obviously subjective matters? Karma necessitates some sort of objective 'good' and 'bad' value to every action, doesn't it?

Karma is not good or bad, its simply reaction. You get what you give, so even if pain, loss, and hopelessness are not objectively bad things if one causes them they are still bound to encounter them again. Furthermore, one could stipulate that good and bad are not so subjective, thought I'd classify it as selfless vs selfish deeds rather than good or bad deeds the idea is that one is typically given a multitude of choices at any one time and that there is one that is karmically best for the universe, or that with ripple effect will create the most happiness and ease the most burdens.

Everything works out in the end, sometimes even badly.
