Hello.

Has anyone ever noticed how one night you will have a bunch of dreams and the next have none? Even if you have had the same amount sleep. I would like to know if there are any patterns that anyone could use to get better recall. Please fill out the following questions. Hopefully I can find some patterns.

P.S. I might ask individual people questions about their anwsers. So check back every so often.

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?
5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?
7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?

Thank you for the people who participate. Hopefully results come soon.

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?
8 hours

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?
7 - 8 times
3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?
Automatic dream recall. If I do not write the dream down I almost instantly fall back asleep. If I do write it down it usually wakes me up and it takes approx. 20 minute estimated time.
4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?
More often than not it is like wathcing a movie.
5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?
5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?
No

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?
Read, think and sometimes try LD techniques. Sometimes sex.

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?
7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?
I have a tremendous ability to wake up nearly withing a ten minute time frame, on my own and regardless of the amount of sleep.

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?
I sometimes do eat before bed. ( I have noted my dream recall is worse) I never eat in the middle of the night.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?
I do not watch TV or play video games. Sometimes watching a movie may induce cool dreams

Thank you for the people who participate. Hopefully results come soon.

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?
7-9hrs

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?
about three to four

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?
Usually the tail end of the dream is right there but I have to backtrack to remember the rest. 10 mins at most.

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?
Random pieces kind of pop in and out. I try not to focus too hard on one or I'll lose another. Atleast untill I jot some notes down on it. Actually it depends on the vividness. If it's really vivid then I remember it as if it just happened.

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?
About 2-3 times a week.

5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?
Depends on how tired I was when I went to sleep. Usually I'll still remember a pretty good one that I have in the morning.

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?
Eat while listening to music and reading these forums. Or just reading a book.

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?
I usually wake up on my own but sometimes I need an extra push for WBTB so I'll set an alarm

7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?
My cell phone plays Waterfall by Jimi Hendrix

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
Yep, most of the time.

8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?
No, sometimes I'll get a drink though.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
I'm not sure but I'd guess less.

9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?
Nope.

7 to 8 hours.

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?
Once or twice. Sometimes never!

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?
About 15 to 30 seconds (I can't really tell because sometimes I don't know I'm dreaming until I've realised 'Well, by now I should be asleep!' =p).

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?
If I've been dreaming for what seems like the whole night, I have to 'search for pieces'.

7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?

7 - I use an alarm and sometimes someone will help me if that's not affecting me enough.
7.1 - It sounds like the typical 'Beep! Beep!' droning (exactly like Neo's alarm in the first Matrix.. =p).

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?

8 - Yes! =D
8.1 - Not unless I'm really tired (for example if I'm having a random 'insomnia attack&#39.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?

9 - No, but it adds more themes to my dreams and when I'm lucid dreaming it gives me fun ideas.
9.1 - Not really, although my dreams are usually pretty wild. =p

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?

7-7.5 normally. Sleep-in days-- 8-9

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?

1-2 normally. Sleep-in days 3-6 (most of those are in the last 1.5 hours. My most memorable dream occur in this time.

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?

Instantly up to several minutes. Occasionally I will suddenly remember a dream in the middle of the day.

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?

Sometimes it is right there. But more often than not, I have to search my mind. Once I remember part I can usually back track until I have much more. If I didn't actively do this technique I would think that I only dream a couple times a week.

I have learned to do this every time I wake up in the night. That is why I can sometimes remember up to 12 dreams a night. Sometimes I write the dream down at the time (usually just key words), sometimes just thinking about it is enough for me to remember it in the morning.

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?

No drinking. No drugs

5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?

N/A

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?

Brush teeth/wash face, etc
Sometimes read
Pray

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?

Alarm

7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?

Radio alarm (world news is usually on)

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?

Not usually

8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?

No

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?

I don't watch TV or play video games, but occasionally I will see a movie or watch a DVD.

9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?

Yes, that will often trigger a dream with that theme.

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?
Seven to seven and 1/2

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?
I didn't, for a while, until I started researching lucid dreaming. Now, once a night. Perfect time for a WILD, too...

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?

I generally wake up in the middle of REM, with a dream. So 0 seconds?

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?

It depends. Usually, closer to the "movie" option

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?

I've never used either of the above
5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?

Go to the washroom, talk to friends on the computer, listen to music.

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own? Alarm
7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?

"BEEP. BEEP. BEEP. BEEP"

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep? Yes. Often 15min before.
8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat? Never. Very occasionally water. Never food.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams? Havent noticed.
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams? I don't usually. I've had some crazy dreams with video game characters, but I didn't play the game directly before bed.. not since summer vacation...

2-5, increasing frequency as the night goes on

A couple of seconds
4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?
Usually it's like I just watched a movie, but sometimes I won't remember them until almost two hours later.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?
I have a tendency to work into my dreams whatever was on TV right before I fell asleep. But I always watch TV, so I don't know if it causes my dreams to be unusual. I think the majority of them are though.

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?

I get about seven to six hours of sleep on weekdays, and about eight to ten hours on weekends.

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?

On weekdays I will wake up only once, on weekends I may wake up multiple times (usually two on average).

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?

It varies of the vivid-ness of the dream. If its a extremely vivid dream it will come to me right when I wake up, but I've had dreams take hours to come to me.

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?

Again, it depends on the vivid-ness. Usually, when I do attempt to search my mind, I come up negative.

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?

Never have. Wouldn't mind trying though.

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?

Weekends will vary, but weekdays follow this sort of pattern:
1. Turn the lights off and set the alarm clock (if needed)
2. Put retainer in
3. Watch t.v. / Shut t.v. off

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?

Alarm, but I will occasionally wake up on my own.

7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?

Most loud and obnoxious thing you will hear in you entire life.

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?

Depends on what kind of night it is. If its busy, then probably, but if not, no.

8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?

Never have.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?

I'm not really sure, considering I usually do both every night.

9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?

Ha. I wish. They are usually about school or the bus ride to school. My dreams put me to sleep

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?
Eight hours, on average.

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?
This is one of my problems; I want to wake up many times during the night without an alarm clock, (and I might be already...) but I either don't wake up, or don't remember the awakenings. So, I'd say zero.

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?

Ten minutes if I actually remember.

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?
Watched a movie.

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?
Yes. I take melatonin, lexapro, and 5-HTP before bed.
5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?
Actually, it's the opposite; if I DONT take them, I remember the dreams. I find it hard to fall asleep without them, though.

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?
Come on DreamViews...
Play some music
Read a book

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?
Alarm or natural waking. If I don't use an alarm, I generally sleep in.
7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?
Crescendo alarm. It starts off with a light slow beeping and increase in tone and rate with time.

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
Most often, yes.
8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?
If I remember waking at night, yes, I usually eat a little something.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
Not that I notice, no. If I see something shocking on TV, maybe.
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?
Again, no.

8.5 hours per night on average, 3 or 4 during finals :-/

I wake up twice during the night usually.*

When I wake up and remember my dreams usually the most recent one is like I just watched a movie, but the one before that usually takes 5 or 6 minutes to surface (and it does so out of order so I have to really work at figuring out which dream that particular snippit falls under).

No substances usually, just a lot of green tea. Sometimes though I'll come back from "hanging out" which means 2-3 cups of coffee

I wake up more often after the coffee, but usually I can get nothing more than two or three words down in the DJ

Before sleep I Floss/Brush, check alarm clock, and put the date in the DJ so I'll know where to write in the morning.

Two alarms are set to wake me, but I usually wake about 15 minutes before them (I think this has something to do with setting them right before bed)
The first plays the intro to a song (instrumental/techno) at 50% volume, 4 minutes of silence, plays it again at full volume, 4 more minutes, and then the whole song. This is to let me stay still and try to gather everything I can remember without moving (across the room) to turn off the alarm. the second alarm beeps real loud.

I eat before bed often, usually not very much though.

I almost never wake to eat, but if I wake for the bathroom (which is rare) I usually chug a glass or two or three of H2O.

I almost never watch TV. One of my first near-lucid experiences was in a video game dream, so when I play games a lot during the day I sometimes dream them at night and have better-than-usual recall of them. I have yet to become fully lucid while in a video game (they're fun though... the physics is game-like and so are the graphics).

I recently quit taking B-6 before bed, noticed a drop in my recall. I have since gotten myself beyond where I was with the B-6, I look forward to the results when I start again. Placebo or not, it works for me.

* I try to autosuggest to myself "wake after each dream and record every detail" occasionally while falling asleep. I often wake after an hour and a half and think that I have yet to fall asleep, but even when I catch it I almost never remember any dreams. I wake again when the sun comes up, usually with a dream, two if I'm lucky. I wake for the last time right before my alarm (on a good, well-rested day) and usually can remember one or two.

If your study yields any results, be sure to keep us posted.

about 8

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?

once

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?

I'm not a WILDer yet

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?

Sometimes pieces, sometimes movie. But even if I recall well I have to repeat the main dream events in my mind a few times otherwise I will forget them before I can write them.
If I do go over them several times, I can remember the dream for many days and write it at my leisure. Usually I go over the dream using visualization. I visualize images from the main events of the dream.

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?
5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?

I rarely use them. And when I do I didn't notice a difference in recall.

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?

also set the alarm clock, turn the lights off, make sure the windows/doors are opened or closed just right to have some air in, but that it won't be too cold ( if it's winter )

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?
alarm.

7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?
it sounds exactly like my cell phone ring ( the alarm clock is my cell phone )

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
Sometimes a snack like cookie, but not much.

8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?
No.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
I don't think so.

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams? Yes, definetely. Videogames more than movies. Even days after playing them!
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams? My dreams are always wierd... Moreso after a nintendofest, I guess.

1 - How many hours of sleep do you get on average a night?
6-7 hours

2 - How many times do you wake up throughout the night on average?
None that I remember, and if I don't, I just get back to sleep quickly enough

3 - When you wake up how long do you sit there before your dream comes to you?
not more than 2 minutes, if I'm i na quiet atmosphere and not in a hurry.. if anythign disturbs me, it can take up to 20 mins

4 - Do you have to search your mind for pieces or is it like you just watched a movie?
I primarily have to find any piece or detail I remember, when I do I try to remember the general dream content, and then I can scan for the missing details or storyline, if I didn't get it so far. Defnitely search my mind for pieces

5 - Do you use mind altering drugs/drink before bed often?
No
5.1 - If you do use, do you remember your dreams in the morning?
--

6 - What are the last 3 things you do before you go to sleep?
first I realise it's late and I should go to bed
then I get to my bedroom and see if I have anything to do for the next day
finally I turn off the lights, take my glasses off and go to sleep

7 - Do you use an alarm to wake up? Person wakes you up? Wake up on your own?
My mother wakes me up mostly, but sometimes the alarm she uses wakes me up first
7.1 - If alarm, how does it sound?
Radio station (morning news)

8 - Do you eat within 1 hour before you go to sleep?
Yes, but not anything hard to digest: mostly some sweet or Coke
8.1 - Do you wake up in the middle of the night and eat?
No

9 - Does watching TV or playing video games give you more dreams?
Don't know if it gives me more dreams, but mostly they affect my dreams (my dreams feture certain aspects of the game/show)
Also, usually when I'm dealing with a new situation (eg travelling somehwere I've never been to) I tend to wake up really easily
9.1 - If you always do one of these before bed does it make you have wild/unusual dreams?
Most of the times, when I play cideogames all day long, I have 2-dimensional dreams. But only if I play for the whole day. But if I'm dealing with anything different from routine (TV, theatre, games, music, swimming, fighting etc) I usually dream about it

guess I'm done
