It's finals week, so I've only had time to skim the lay mans article. But it seems to me that if what they're claiming is true, then this is a huge step forward for the science behind lucid dreaming.

Some possible discussion points

critiques of the study, was it conducted properly, any obvious flaws/limitations
Does the lay man article accurately describe the results of the study, or are they sensationalizing it?
beyond understanding lucid dreaming, how useful might this method be for studying consciousness?
Implications for lucid dreaming in general, is it a good thing if we develop an easy route to lucidity, or will something be lost if people no longer have to undergo extensive training?

Its interesting about the 40Hz signal. Researchers at Transparent Corporation have found that their cd with a 40 Hz isochronic tone has induced spontaneous OBE's for some people.

Thread needs moving to proper location too.

It's really interesting, but obviously a bit pop sciency. Maybe in a few years, we'll have lucid dreaming helmets. Maybe nothing will come of it. I remain cautiously optimistic.

I see it as a very plausible device. A rem detector hooked up to a device playing a 40Hz isochronic tone would generate far better results than flashing red LED's in one's eyes with recent scientific findings. Perhaps the nova dreamer and other such devices will enter a new era soon.

I think this thread should be in Dream Research and not Science & Mathematics.
