Can't decide between left and right

I'm walking and encounter a tree, a telephone pole, or something else like that. I can't decide whether to go left or right. I have no reason to choose one side over the other, so my mind makes up certain meanings for each side.

One side will cause bad things to happen in my life (like it will take slightly longer and bring me to an intersection in time to be hit by a car) and I need to avoid that side. Or each side represents a possible choice involved in some real-life dilemma I'm experiencing. I have to choose before I reach it. Sometimes I end up slowing down before it, frantically trying to decide in time. When I was younger it was so bad I'd sometimes go one way, then feel it was the wrong choice, backtrack and go the other way, even though I knew that people were around.

      Has anyone else experienced this?

No, I usually just run through things to avoid the hassle of decision making.

I try to focus on the present and not worry what future consequences my choices now will have.
However, maybe you would have been hit by a car if you walked the other way. So keep being paranoid

Well I described exactly what it was in detail. If you want to put the label on it go ahead. But it seems when people use that they think it's some volition I just can't control, and ignore the fact that there are mental processes involved which make some sense when broken down.

I don't know which way will have the worst consequences. The car example was just the first I could think of. I usually don't have any specific negative consequence in mind, I just know that one way will cause me to have a better life than the other. And in some cases it's true, and I know that, but have no way of knowing which. That's why it seems so important and frustrating that I don't know.

That's why I added the question Mark, I'm just putting it out there that it could be OCD. I guess I should have worded it differently...

We try to always rationalise things. You're just rationalising the emotion you felt. People with OCD also do this, we just forget that when the thing is written down in a book like some sort of disease.
Like they have no control over it and just automatically do whatever compulsion they have.
It's not actually like that at all.

No, it's okay. I know it's OCD, you're right. I had used the term in the OP but deleted it because of what I said in my last reply.

If you're saying that the compulsion is there without any reason, and I'm making up reasons to rationalise, that might be right. There's definitely a base feeling, sometimes I get it without reason.

I'm not focused enough to have bigger troubles with OCD.
One time I was walking up a hill to a gas station to buy a soda. I was happily going about my business, paying attention at streets but mostly lost in though. I was about to cross one street but I had to spit. So I dallied a moment and during that moment, a car zoomed out of nowhere and would have hit me had I not stopped. I was really paranoid there for awhile. Part of me felt like if I didn't spit before crossing the road I'd be plowed down.
But before long, I forgot all about it except for after the fact.

That's the only time I've ever had that sort of issue.

Something kinda similar goes through my head whenever I'm walking around posts or fences or whatever in the street. Sometimes when I'm walking with other people and we come to a pole or something, some of us will take the left side while others take the right. And I get this funny idea that whatever side we choose, it will determine what will happen with our lives or something along those lines. Like the group that took the left side will live fairly boring, average lives, whereas the ones who took the right will become very successful.

I obviously never take any of it seriously, because that would be insane. It's just one of the many daft, uncontrolled thoughts that pop into my head from time to time.

Too much trolling on this thread.

I think this has some relevance here -

When I was probably 14 or 15 I had a black light poster of a demon - fairly cartoonish looking. I began to think of it as evil, like it was actually casting some evil influence over my life, and when bad things would happen I'd throw darts at the poster or cut it up because I blamed it and wanted to externalize the sense of evil onto something that I could take action against.

This is fetishizing - externalizing things that are really internal. In your case it sounds like you're trying to externalize choices... not particular ones, but maybe just the whole idea of choices and the fact that we can't know just what the exact consequences of our choices will be long term.

Eventually that poster got all torn up and thrown away, and I never projected Evil onto anything again (that I can think of anyway).

It's possible this is a phase you're going through due to anxieties that are so powerful you feel the need to externalize them.

How long has this been happening? And how frequent is it - like all the time or occasionally?

I know what you mean actually. Or I get the feeling that if I don't do something, like choose a certain direction or play a certain song that comes up or something, it will cause something bad to happen. Then I try to dismiss it since it doesn't make any sense, but part of me is like "you'll regret not doing it if something bad happens!" and..I normally end up doing it, lol. Similar to Heavy Sleeper also, I sometimes feel like things like walking on the opposite side of a pole as someone is symbolic somehow. A lot of other things feel that way, too. Gotta say I have a strong preference for the right side of anything most of the time though.
