On my Ubuntu, for some reason, FF is a LOT more sensitive to this than FF on Windows. Like, just typing a message to someone on facebook is unbearably laggy. But only on my Linux laptop. Not sure why. Also, any blogspot page hangs it for a few seconds while it generates I-don't-know-what on the left side. Same is true for browsing Yahoo groups.
Turn off visual effects, on older machines, Compiz effects really slow some things down.
Speed dial isn't the only thing for Opera. Mouse gestures are amazing, superior password manager, Opera Link backs up and stores your bookmarks and speed dial across all computers, and it's much more lightweight than Firefox. Sure, the add-ons on Firefox are nice, but most of them are only there to add basic functionality that Firefox lacks out of the box compared to others, and most of them are pretty useless.
