      Almost a WILD?

The other night I attempted a WILD. I did a WBTB, and decided to start from there. After a while I experienced the hypnogogic imagery, and remained focused on being alert and the mantra "the next time I'm dreaming I'll realize I'm dreaming". Not long after this I had an odd feeling throughout my body (I think), and "felt" and "heard" an almost electrical buzzing in my nose. I'm not sure if this was a hallucination or I started breathing through a stuffy nose and interpreted the sound as a buzzing. Anyway, I was still aware as this was going on, but almost immediately I experienced a hypnogogic jerk that woke me up completely.

Was I close to a WILD, do you suppose? Is this hypnogogic jerk a common occurrence, or was it just bad luck on my part?

Well, experiencing HI and SP is definitely the beginnings of a WILD, so you're definitely close. Sometimes when one is about to enter SP, they "know" they're going to enter it soon, which may have been what you felt. Either that, or it could've been vibrations or something similar. The buzzing was probably a hallucination, especially if it was louder.

As for the hypnic jerk, it sometimes happens when your body's about to fall asleep; I'm sure you've experienced it before at one time or another. I'm guessing it was just bad luck.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.
