I find that I'm either TOO tired, and nothing seems to anchor me -- or I'm too alert, and I hardly even get fuzzy limbs, let alone SP.
I tried counting, but when I'm tired I just lose track and you can only count 1, 2, 3... so many times before you're out like a light. I tried math, like... 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+4=7... but soon I get confused as to where I'm at, lol. I haven't been able, for the life of me, to imagine I'm walking (I guess cause I'm lying down and feel that weight on my back).
Then there's the flip side, where I have literally lain there for 2-3 hours, without barely even seeing hypnagogic imagery. I don't move a muscle, and still nothing.
The closest I've come to a successful WILD, I basically concentrated so hard one the experience, but fell asleep (missing the change) and kept dreaming I was trying. I had several false awakenings, and never grasped that it was all a dream.
I'm afraid a timer would just keep waking me up if I became successful, or I'd just stay awake in anticipation/fear of that blasted beep.
Any ideas?
