Hey Genzor,
When I was starting out, I too was amazed with this WILD technique. It seemed so simple, yet so hard.
I struggled with WILDing for a very long time, and I persued it 'till I had mastered the technique.
As much as you may disregard a dream journal, and reality checks, they are in fact a necessity.
Think of it this way, you could have tried a WILD last night, per say, and successfully had a lucid dream. However, you have woken up the next morning with no memory of your past dream. Therefore, you must practice dream recall. I think you see it's importance.
Reality checks should be put in use in ANY case of lucid dreaming. To stabilize the dream you are to perform different reality checks and increase the clarity. You can find out different techniques and such in the archived tutorial portion of the forum.
Now, to help you WILD.
First off, your going to want to set an alarm 5-6 hours after you go to sleep. Say you go to sleep at 10 pm. Set an alarm at 3-4 AM, and get up at this point.
You should get up, go to the bathroom, stretch, and do whatever for approximately 5 minutes.
At this point, your body should want to get back to bed. Get into your most comfortable sleeping position (make sure you are on your back) and do whatever is necessary to be comfortable and relaxed.
As you close your eyes, think about what you will do in the morning, and ponder different things. As you feel tiredness flood through your body, begin counting your breaths.
Breathe in, breathe out = 1
Do not control your thoughts other than the counting. Your subconscious will be thinking of random things as you fall asleep, dont ponder a thought for too long and concentrate on counting.
Around 50-60 counts, your breathing may sound different. I cannot stress the importance of NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THESE THINGS. Continue counting.
Around 100 you may see different fractals floating around in your eye lids. Do not focus on this.
Continue counting until your body seems weightless, and you receive a sinking feeling. You should feel slight to moderate vibrations and hear light buzzing noises.
Don't worry, your body is going to sleep. DISREGARD EVERYTHING
You will feel as if you are being sucked into a tunnel, and your body will feel like a vortex. Relax and stay calm. Let yourself breath, don't constrict or control your current breathing pattern.
If you have gotten past this point and have not woken yourself up, you are a step ahead.
At this point, is where I believe your problem lies.
Visualize something, anything you want.
We will use an apple as an example. Think of an apple, and then think of the leaves of the apple, branching out into a tree, and then develop a whole scene taking baby steps. The tree to the root, to the grass, to the field, to the sky.
And before you know it, you will be conscious of your dream.
At this point I recommend you do reality checks (my favorite is the nose-plug; if you are not familiar with it, you plug your nose and try to breathe through it. If you can, it is an accomplishment!)
Stabilize your dream by observing your body, you may have more than 5 fingers and look abnormal. That is normal. When the dream begins to get hazy, shout clarity and repeat above steps.
Do whatever your heart desires, friend.
If there are any questions, concerns, I would be glad to clear things up.
(Im back!) ~Clearview.
