When you're attempting a WILD at night, it's crucial to accompany it with a WBTB. There are a couple different reasons for this.

      1. You're probably not as relaxed as you'd be if you used WBTB, after sleeping and being completely relaxed for 4-6 hours.
      2. You're not in REM yet, which is important for dream formation. Even if you do enter SP or get HI, it may fade quickly. If you happen to enter a dream, it will most likely be unstable, fuzzy, or dim.
      3. You might still have a lot of thoughts in your head, so it's important to sleep before the attempt to clear your thoughts. When you do the WBTB and get back into bed, you'll have more of a mental "clean slate".

If you use WBTB when WILDing, along with relaxation exercises such as stretching beforehand, you should feel SP in a matter of minutes. It's different for everyone, especially since you might be more relaxed than someone else trying the same technique, so there's no "set in stone" time. For me, I actually do my WILDs during a nap, three hours after waking up in the morning, and enter SP in about twenty minutes.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

Its different for everybody so its pointless giving you a time cause it could be longer, or quicker for you.
If your trying to enter SP im assuming that your attempting WILD?
WILD is always better of being combined with a WBTB you wont find large success rates without it.

To answer your question even a little though, it shouldnt be an hour. Probably about 10-30mins ish if your doing it right.

I want to ask something too, I'll use this thread if it's ok.
Is it 100% sure that you'll at least get to SP?

If you WILD before any prior sleep at night, I'd say there's like a 5% chance you'll get into SP. You'd have to relax a whole lot; even with relaxation though, you're still looking at an hour or so of just lying there. With prior sleep or during a nap, more like 20 minutes with relaxation.

Like puffin mentioned, you really need to start with a WBTB. If you absolutely can not fit one into your schedule, try doing this during an afternoon nap. The timing is just not right at the beginning of your night of sleep.

If you find yourself becoming tired or falling asleep before seeing results, the easiest thing to do is just to extend the duration of your actual WBTB. Maybe turn a few lights on or even surf online for a few minutes if you really find it hard to "wake up" enough. But lights can be fairly stimulating, so be sure not to use them too much during the WBTB. You'll know if you've become too wide awake; if this happens, just meditate or listen to relaxing music to try and relax, or simply shorten the WBTB time.
