Got waking up for DEILDing down, just don't know how to keep aware

I've been practicing DEILD for a couple of weeks now. I'm able to wake up when my auto-shutoff alarm rings, and most of the time stay still. But something weird happens. I'm aware of that for about 2-3 seconds. My heart is pounding and I get nervous. Then there is total blackness. And then I wake up the next time I wake up.

I don't know how I can keep myself aware to get into the dream.. I guess I keep falling asleep. How can I stay aware long enough?

Have you tried daydreaming/visualisation? It doesn't keep you aware by itself, but it helps the dreambuilding process so you'll enter the dream faster. I use visualisation in DEILD, while being passively aware of my breathing. It feels as every slow exhale takes me closer to the visualised dream.

As DEILD is a fast method, visualisation makes it even faster. You won't need to stay aware for more than a couple of minutes at most, sometimes it takes only seconds.

      Happy dreaming, Tucane

Thanks! I'll try visualization, guess I forgot about that.

I agree with Tucane. The transition into DEILD is extremely fast. For me, never longer than 1 min, closer to 20 seconds. You want to fall asleep fast again, not to stay aware. To stay in "dreaming" state of mind, think about the dream you just came out of.

For me, these transitions are really strange, because this is the time, when I "remember" techniques of entering LD. Like if you have ever experienced the "falling" sensation, try to recall that just by thinking of yourself falling down, or leaning backwards and falling to the ground like that. Remember, that at this point, your dream vision should kick in and you should see your room or some other place. When you see that around you, just get up from the bed and continue with your LD, because you are in a dream.

Move your fingers a little bit. I find it's enough to keep me aware, yet not enough to keep me from falling back to sleep.
