Hi sanctum,
Although it's true that if you sleep deprived, body wants to catch up on REM sleep first. But it has to be exact amount of sleep deprivation. If you overdo it, then your body will fall into deep NREM sleep, because that is same important as REM sleep, only for different reasons.
So instead of sleep deprivation, how about you just do the naps? During nap, even if it's after a normal 8 hr night sleep, we go pretty much straight to REM. Some people have sucessfully WILDed even in afternoon naps. For me personally, morning naps are the best, especially for WILD.
I would go through just a very short NREM - which is basically stage 1 of falling asleep and light sleep. Then pretty much straight to REM, skipping the deep sleep.
I use the same technique for a WBTB as for a nap.
To be able to fall asleep just at the right time when dream is ready for you, you have to practice. Do mental preparation. IMHO, that's best described here WILD
Good luck
