How long does it take to wild ?

      Hello everyone,

I was trying to WILD for the couple of days. But I lay down in my bed like 30 minutes and the only thing i feel is numbness.Nothing else. And is swallowing saliva okay when trying to wild please tell me. So I wanted to know how long does it take to enter SP and the hypnagogic fase etc.

There is no set period of time which you must wait until you WILD. I told you not to worry about sleep paralysis, that and hypnagogic imagery are non-issues. You will WILD when you're comfortable and sleepy enough to fall asleep but aware enough not to lose consciousness.

Generally if I don't wild in the first 5 minutes I forget about it. Check out these threads:
Why You Fail at WILDs - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views
Mzzkcs Comprehensive WILD Guide - Lucid Dreaming - Dream Views

They have helped me get to about 2 wilds a week, and I mainly focus on DILD.

I agree w/ Sensei (though I suspect I give it about ten). Best to MILD (If you haven't already) and fall asleep after that. Only so many hours in the night!

^^ Wow, guys, I don't think I've fallen asleep in 5 to 10 minutes in my life; I am definitely jealous!

Amazingdreamer1: As Mimi already said, you are not attempting to achieve "SP," but a WILD; try not to make SP a goal in any form. Anyway:

I usually put an outside limit of 90 minutes on a WILD attempt (including WBTB), since that is a typical maximum length that a REM period should last. If you are still not asleep after, say, 2hrs, your normal sleep cycle very likely may have finished and you will have missed your chance to "catch" REM anyway, so moving on might be a good idea. Also, my personal average for getting to sleep during WILD is about an hour, including WBTB -- this does not of course include DEILD's, where I'm never fully awake in the first place.

So I guess the bottom line here is that it will take as long as it takes; there is no "official" time to know when to give up a WILD attempt. I suggest that you keep on trying for up to 90 minutes at least a couple of times, just to see if maybe you needed some more time.

Sageous. When I go to sleep at the beginning of the night it takes about 15. It takes about 5-10 minutes, if I feel no wild coming, I will just mantra a bit longer and sleep and catch a DILD

      ^^ Still jealous...

My wife is like that too. She usually takes about five minutes to get to sleep; which drives me nuts sometimes. What a tool that talent is for LD'ing!

However you cut it, WILD still requires you to make that delicate balance between waking and sleeping. If you try too hard to WILD, you will just stay awake. Too little and you fall asleep. You have to relax enough to almost fall asleep.
At least that's been my experience.
I've only managed a few times, and every one has taken at least an hour after waking for a WBTB.
I must try doing a WBTB but going straight back to sleep for an hour then waking on an alarm and trying then.

      Hey Amazingdreamer1,
I'm going to merge your threads so you can have all your answers in one place. You only need to post in one subforum in future so we don't have double ups.

In the meantime, here's a hilarious screenshot of the rather unfortunate placement of this ellipsis for Sageous' post:
