I'll bet you fell asleep almost instantly as soon as you "gave up," right? Well, you need to memorize that "gave up, go to sleep" mindset and fool yourself perhaps a little bit that you are indeed heading right for sleep, in order to get closer to the transition to sleep before trying to start holding on to awareness.
I see learning to WILD (which I still am after 1.5 years, but admittedly my attempts are fairly far apart) as a series of damped oscillations: since you appear to be in the "stays awake a long time" camp (as opposed to "falls asleep immediately, unconsciously camp, which I'd much prefer to be in"), you should initially overshoot aiming for sleep at first. Then if you do indeed fall asleep unconsciously, next time, aim a little less on the side of sleep. If you stay awake for hours, then that's too much awareness, next time, average the previous two attempts, and so on. You're performing a series of experiments trying to zero in on the exact balance of awareness needed.
Just remember: in order to WILD, you must fall asleep. That thought may help you in finding your balance.
