[Story Challenge Feb/Mar] Voting now open! Winning Topic Announcement, Ongoing Discussion.

Because it seems there is a time limit on thread editing (I cannot modify the last topic), and because I do not want to spam the board with new ones, this thread will serve three purposes:

      • To announce that voting is now open (presently)
      • To announce the winning topic (on Friday)
      • To ptovide a place for ongoing discussion about your progress or about the challenge in general.

The topic suggestion phase is over, and no new suggestions will be counted. The suggested topics are:

      Glass
      Forest
      Redemption
      Failure
      Transgressing Boundaries
      Superstition
      The Future
      Death
      Confusion

You will have until Friday 15th afternoon to send a private message to me (Identity X) with your vote, which will take ye olde "Eurovision" form, simplified to 3 choices of topic, weighted with 3, 2 and 1 point(s) respectively. E.g.

      Hi Identity X,

      My vote for the topics:
      3 points: Foo
      2 points: Bar
      1 point: Foobar
I will then tabulate this and post it along with the announcement of the winning topic. The competition begins then!

I want to vote for "Glass Forest."
If you have a sense of caring for others, you will manifest a kind of inner strength in spite of your own difficulties and problems. With this strength, your own problems will seem less significant and bothersome to you. By going beyond your own problems and taking care of others, you gain inner strength, self-confidence, courage, and a greater sense of calm.Dalai Lama

Can't compete in this first one, really busy. But I want there to be a new contest in two weeks time, it's a good idea that I wants to participate in.

The challenge is four weeks long, so you'll be able to partake in this one. Two weeks should be long enough for a short piece.

Just a question, (I know that we are not writing yet)

When we do finally vote for a topic what are the specifics with things such as format, and who to send file to, etc...

      Thanks,

Thanks for your interest. It isn't too late to join, people can join whenever (even after topic has been chosen).

There is no format whatsoever, including any say on length. After the challenge has come to its conclusion, I'll start a thread so you can post a link to a hosted pdf, txt file, doc or whatever of the story, or in the post itself hidden in spoiler tags (to avoid mega posts that hide others' work). I'll explain this nearer the time, but the bottom line is, that you don't send the file to anyone in particular.

Got eleven or so votes in, and it's working nicely. Tomorrow afternoon will be the big announcement .

VOTES ARE IN! THE WINNING TOPIC IS
      DEATH

      Votes breakdown:

      THE CHALLENGE STARTS NOW!
Challenge will be 28 days (4 weeks) long but as it already late I'll give you an extra day giving you a "recommended" finish date of
      Saturday, 15th of March

      Rules:
      • Absolutely no limits on style or length, except that it vaguely resembles prose.
      • New participants can join at any time.
      • Late submissions are very welcome. Suggested deadline is there to (a) ease the monthly nature of the competition (if it is successful this first month, which I hope it will be!) and (b) to provide an upper limit and with it direction and motivation.
      • The story must interpret the topic in some way. Something more than just namechecking it, perhaps. Open interpretation is encouraged, however.

Nice, I already know what I'm going to write. What I'll probably do is put it up on my site that I host most of my writing on, then just link to it on here. Also, if I finish it within, say, two weeks of the deadline, should I go ahead and post it, or wait until the deadline?

Probably best to wait. Don't want to go an inspire any knock-offs now, do we?

I don't yet have a title; that's almost always the last step for me, but expect overly dramatic, humorous, tongue-in-cheek prose that isn't afraid to make fun of itself. Also, expect anthropomorphic personifications of astronomical proportion.

I don't know if I am going to go in for this, there is a lot of risk of people stealing your work. Hmmn.

Quite frankly, when it's just for fun like this, who really cares? Besides, I find the likelihood of that being quite low.

Ah, great. Now to make something that stands out~ The hard part is figuring out how. I don't want to end up with some gloomy emo suicide escape junk...

There are tons of stories about death that aren't all gloomy. As I lay here dying, the sixth sense, hell even the notebook included death.

Sean Connery: "Then the game is on!"

And indeed, it is on. Let's see if I can come up with a "short" story.

Obscure "Extraordinary League of Gentleman" quote?

A surprisingly good film. I shall look forward to reading everyone's short stories.

It's "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," actually.

I have a problem now. I have far too many ideas bouncing around in my head to write only one. So how do we feel about multiple submissions?
