Bright lights can suppress REM sleep, I believe: sunlight acts as a natural stimulant to wake people up, and the light emanating from a computer or T.V. screen can do the same thing to the body. Less REM sleep means a decreased likeliness to dream and remember those dream, which also means less likelihood of remembering a lucid. Not to say there haven't been cases where people have had lucid dreams; watching T.V. just makes it harder.
We all live in a kind of continuous dream. When we wake, it is because something,
some event, some pinprick even, disturbs the edges of what we have taken as reality.

I fall asleep with my tv on almost every night...I either set it on the sleep timer, or I keep it on all night with the volume all the way down
I just keep it on for light
      From my rotting body,
      flowers shall grow
      and I am in them
      and that is eternity.

The sounds of the television always take control of my dreams, and render me unable to become lucid.
---o--- my DCs say I'm dreamy.

Yes it is possible to get lucid with the tv on. Its a lot harder though and really there isn't any reason to be having the tv on as your going to sleep anyways (its not like your going to be watching it while your asleep) so this is kinda an odd discussion :p I guess if you want a night light or something I would get why your asking this question but if you need a night light then....use a night light! A tv is unessesary and counterproductive.

... I've never heard of people who need to sleep with the tv on. The last time I fell asleep with the tv on was when I was hugging my dog while he was sleeping and I fell asleep. I woke up with him curled up against me with his head snuggled into my neck. What a sweetie

      BUT ANYWAY

      why oh why?!?

I can't sleep with the T.V. on... Especially with that buzzing, high-frequency noise coming from certain ones! That's enough to drive me crazy!

I have an old man living in my closet, too. I know he's there because he keeps stealing all my socks. I think he must have a peg leg, because he only takes one sock from of each pair.

TV before going to bed is bad because it stimulates you. But that doesn't stop me cuz I can't go to bed without watching TV first. Also, I can't sleep without my fan. I hate the quiet now cuz I've been using a fan every night for about 4 years now. Without mu fan, I hear this buzzing noise in my ear and it drives me crazy.

Its still bright. Again, what is the point of sleeping with the tv on? I guess if you really want to go ahead, but know that your chances of getting lucid will be lower.

Some people (such as myself) can't stand the silence when trying to fall asleep. That's one of the main reasons I keep mine on.

Hes probably used to falling asleep with the tv on. I have always fallen asleep with the tv or a movie on, it helped me goto bed, my daughter loves watching a princess movie as she goes to bed too. But since ive been interested in LDing i find having the tv on more of a distraction, and i always get up to shut it off b4 my eyes close

Use white noise or listen to a relaxing song or something. Anything that doesnt emit light. If you can ld with the light then great, but for most its harder.

That's why I sleep with a fan on every night. You should try that out. It might save a little more electricity than keeping the TV on all night. Plus its pretty soothing noise.

This is a bit off topic, but some nights the ticking of a clock in my living room seems impossibly loud. It will keep me from sleeping. Other nights, I can't hear it at all. Is this 100% subjective? Do factors such as temperature and humidity alter sound transference enough to notice something like this?

I think it just depends on how much your attention is drawn towards it. We have a clock in our family room and if I sleep out there and I notice the sound right when I start to sleep, then it will take me awhile to get the noise out of my head. I have to draw my attention towards something else like my breathing. Usually I'll just bring my fan out there and it will overpower the ticking noise of the clock.

I don't think lights or TV or any electronic device is an issue. I sleep with my lights on and my computer monitor is sometimes on too when I fall asleep. My brother also does the same thing and he lucid dreams fine, in fact wouldn't that improve lucid dreaming to some extent? If you hear a show in your dream you can recognize that you left your TV on and figure out you're dreaming. Also I thought I read a technique before that encourages you to wear a head set with storm noises in the background. The idea is it will create a storm in your dream to make you realize that the storm is from your head set and you lucid dream.

Also I guess it varies from person to person, although I disagree with this completely.
Lucid dreaming takes three things: Patience, practice, and perseverance.
