The true intent is to fall asleep. Not to WILD, but to "fall asleep consciously". Getting hung up on "I'm going to WILD tonight" or becoming too determined can actually impede your attempts. You don't want to put all this focus on just staying awake and thinking about how you'll get in a lucid dream once you hit SP; it's more of just letting your mind relax until your body falls asleep. 
Like Reclypso said, after six hours of sleep is a better time to wake up. You might also want to try WILDing during a nap, five or six hours after waking up. It helps if you were fairly active in those hours, so when you finally lie down, it's easier to relax and get into SP. I find most of my episodes occur during naps, usually a little after 12 o'clock (I get up at 7 every morning, which means about five and a half hours of activity).
When you're WILDing, there's sometimes a fine line to draw between staying aware and falling completely asleep. It helps if you just let your mind wander, but you have to be careful because if you don't use an anchor, you'll drift off. Yes, sometimes when you WILD you might suddenly enter SP and be jolted out of it because of how relaxed your mind is, but that's where practice comes in. It's more mental discipline than anything else. I like to look at the backs of my eyelids when I try to enter SP, but not focus on any other parts of my body.
